In my books, once you’ve been to one Belgian Beer Bar, you’ve been to them all. De Post, however, is the exception to that rule.
It’s a cut above the rest in this city. Why? Well, from the moment you walk in the door you get an instant liking for the place.
It has a warm and inviting atmosphere; an abundance of heaters; plenty of tables with candles flickering in red holders; and rich red velvet curtains that create a feeling of cosiness.
An upstairs area is used mainly for dining, but you can have meals downstairs as well. There are also a number of tables that are reasonably private if you fancy a quiet moment with that someone special.
The selection of beers is impressive with extensive tasting notes. Hoegaarden is on tap ($6.50 for 250ml); so are the more exclusive options—try Chimay Blue Trappist Ale with red currant undertones ($14.50 for a 350ml bottle). The wine list fairs well, with most wine available by the glass and reasonably priced.
Friendly staff, dressed in smart black uniforms, give De Post Belgian Beer Café a touch of class that some other bars could do well to follow. Their relaxed, efficient service is outstanding and the table service is, of course, always appreciated.
Expect a crowd of mainly couples or older family groups at this venue, who come here to enjoy the food (obligatory Moules Frittes) and good Belgian beer.
De Post is in a great location right in the heart of the Mt Eden village with plenty of parking near-by. It’s a real favourite with the locals and if you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate National Belgian Day (21 July) you know where to go.
