Cosset, Mt Albert - Cafe Review

Blink and you’ll miss Cosset – it’s on New North Rd, sandwiched between Chinese restaurants and computer repair shops.

Food

Vegetarian and vegan, with an interesting selection of salads (see highlights below) and a mass of sweet counter treats which I didn’t try. I chose the Vegetable Filo Pie, which had roasted pumpkin, courgette, spinach and caramelised onion. I’m sad to say that this was something of a disappointment, lacking in seasoning and as such pretty bland. The only real flavour that came through was the pumpkin which in itself was ok, but desperately needed some other flavour to make it special. It also came out barely warm which didn’t help. It was a massive portion so I almost didn’t need the side salads (which admirably you get to choose two portions of).

Drinks

Excellent Kokako coffee, perfectly brewed.

Vibe

A cute thrown-together feel with mismatched chairs, cushions and curiosities lining the shelves and walls. One suggestion – get more newspapers. There was one copy of the Weekend Herald when I went so it was a fight over who got the good bits and who got lumped with the Property and Racing pages.

Service

Pretty slow. It took two rounds of coffees for what I presumed was counter food to be delivered.

Highlights

The Thai vermicelli salad packs some punch – if you’re into Thai flavours, you’ll really like this.

The Bottom Line

I like the idea, I like the random location and I loved the coffee. But if vegetarian food is all that’s on offer, it needs to wow with its flavour and on that front, coupled with patchy service, Cosset didn’t deliver.
