We booked for a table for six people. It took 30 mins before they took our first order for tea and bubbles. The food then took over an hour to arrive. When asked about why the food was so late in turning up, they answered it was because they ran out of food. Food was nice, but the timing was the worst I've ever experienced. Will not be going back to Cornwall Park Restaurant.
I’m going to cut to the chase straight away. After finishing our high tea I asked my wife. “Tell me the problems you have with this high tea, just in your opinion I won’t sway you at all?” Her answer ‘I don’t know really” My response to this is simple. That was my point; I couldn’t really find a fault as such in any of the high tea. If I was to be picky then I could say the dessert plate was probably far too heavy and cakey and something refreshing would have been nice but this is neither here nor there as we had friends go on our recommendations and they loved the sweets.
The high tea consisted of 3 tiers as always and this was a top tier of sweets, lemon meringue, chocolate cake, madelines, sticky date pudding and a lemon and almond sponge. The Second tier was ham sandwiches, smoked salmon sandwiches and egg mayonnaise sandwiches. The bottom tier was scones, spanakopita and smoked salmon profiteroles.
As mentioned before I thought after eating scones, savouries and sandwiches that the sweets although all delicious were a little heavy but the lemon meringue was brilliant easily the best dessert very lemony and bitter which was a nice change to the other sweets.
The sandwiches weren’t big flavours and rather simple and tasty, the egg was chunky in the egg mayonnaise which was a nice change to the usual grated version which I even do myself.
Then on the bottom layer the scones were fresh plain scones and perfectly cooked whilst the spanakopita was cheesy and moist and accompanied by the profiteroles which were a nice bite.
Overall I’m glad to be writing a positive report and if you want high tea it’s definitely one you should consider.
Cornwall Park Restaurant offers a pretty reasonable high tea with a reasonable spread of food. Quality wise, it's not the best but it's alright nonetheless. Also a great location being located smack in the middle of Cornwall Park.
Previous visits have been okay. Granted, the last time I visited was a year ago. However, on my most recent visit, it seemed like things that could go wrong, did.
The service was just short of lousy. However, giving them the benefit of doubt, it could have been just WHO was serving you.
My table setting had neither a glass for water or napkin. I was provided with a napkin, but not a glass. When asked again, the waitress thought it better to argue that there were enough glasses for everyone instead of bringing me one - even if she could at least have brought me one from the other end of the table where one extra glass was hidden from our view (it wasn't just me who couldn't see it).
And just when I thought everything was sorted and we could settle into enjoying our afternoon tea.... my food never turned up. Even though I notified 3 different wait staff and asked on at least 5 different times. We were there for an hour and a half. I would have even appreciated being told that they'd run out of scones (if that were the case), but nope, they just kept telling me "It's on its way".
To add to everything, mid-way through our meal, our waitress comes up and asks the organiser if she'd been told that we had to vacate our table by 4pm because of a wedding. No one had informed us / the organiser.
Overall experience - Not very enjoyable. I'll give credit to one of the waitress who was probably the most attentive and who could be bothered to do her job well. My tea was complimentary at the end of the day, but, I'd much rather have paid in full for my meal and had a nice enjoyable afternoon tea.
2 stars because of its terrible service. Otherwise, 3 stars at most.
I booked a business lunch for 4 people here, after reading about it in ViewAucklands list of best reataurants for lunch outside of the CBD. It was a good choice. The first good thing about the place was lots of available parking, very useful. We received a nice warm welcome and were shown to our table, which had beautiful outlook over the park and gardens. The service was prompt without being in your face, drinks may have been a bit quicker but we weren't in a great hurry. All of the meals were superb, the seafood chowder in particular was incredibly tasty. Pricing was not over the top for a good quality restaurant, about expected. We will return again.
The location, as always is amazing. Presentation of food, fantastic. Thought the serving staff let down the restaurant a little - dropped a few items, and weren't super friendly - but Cornwall Park Restaurant is still one of my favourite places to eat breakfast.
