Newmarket: how come nobody I know ever goes there? Yet, on the rare occasions I do, I can never find parking on the street.

Now that Teed Street is becoming Auckland’s fashion sub-central with Zambesi, Kate Sylvester and others setting up shop, it might become even more difficult to park once those Urban Assault Vehicles pull in from Remuera to load up with frocks.

And, as they say, a girl’s gotta eat. Teed Street offers Columbus Coffee within high-heel tottering distance from the fashion shops.

With table seating at the large, but unattractively barren square outside, and a spacious interior, Columbus is a popular breakfast spot. It has a pleasant ambience, round tables too small for four, a good selection of papers and glossies (so this is where old copies of Unlimited end up), and has the customary range of coffees, fruit drinks and kids options (flat white $3.30, fluffies $1).

Breakfast options include bagels ($4—$8.50), muesli with yoghurt for the skinny girls ($8.50), eggs benedict ($14) and more.

The big breakfast I had recently was substantial ($16.50) and included half an avocado; a nice touch given the season had passed.

The big sausage was a little cold, the bacon slightly blackened on the edges, but there were four halved and fried potatoes, a tasty grilled tomato, two poached eggs (a wee bit dry for me, but that’s always a matter of taste) and toast.

It was hefty, and the kind of thing to set you up proper for waddling down the road to try on frocks and say, “Does my bum look big in this?”
