The ViewAuckland Review

Pleasingly rustic and laidback, with a Spanish-style glass and wrought iron pavilion sitting on the edge of vineyards. There’s also grassy hillside and alfresco spots to dine even more casually.

Bright, bubbly and efficient, especially from the international bevy of wait staff with Mexican, Italian and Brazilian accents.

The Spanish- and Portuguese-influenced menu varies seasonally, and always includes authentic tapas and larger raciones made for sharing. Perfect for two is the Portuguese cataplana of local seafood ($48.50). Served with long grain rice cooked in squid ink, it’s an abundant saffron-infused dish crammed with terakihi, mussels, octopus, prawns, Spanish white beans, and Casita Miro’s homemade chorizo.

Most Surprising Dish

The seadas, gossamer-light deep-fried pastries crammed with gooey pecorino cheese and served with an orange and rosewater syrup. A traditional dessert on Sardinia apparently, and deservedly popular on Auckland’s own wine island.

Drinks List

Focused mainly on Miro Vineyard’s own wines – try the 2005 Archipelago, a luscious Boredeaux-style mix of Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes – and other essential summertime distractions like sangria, and Pale Ale from the Waiheke Island Brewery.

The Bottom Line

Authentically Spanish, and a tad rustic and quirky, Casita Miro is a wonderful local alternative to a long flight to Barcelona. There’s even a Miro and Gaudi-style mosaic garden taking shape above the restaurant.

A Reason To Return

To sample chef Justin Scheihing’s increasing interest and expertise in charcuterie, especially the interesting lamb and fig or Moroccan-style merguez sausages.
