Calliope Road Cafe, Devonport - Cafe Review
On a day when Auckland's weather was at its schizophrenic best, Calliope Road Cafe seemed to be hosting half of Devonport's "lunching ladies". Art work from local artists flank one wall, but it was the cafe's well stocked magazine rack that caught my eye.
Warm and chatty for the most part, yet I did note one of the staff members was very shrift - not only with my order but the facial expression from one of the patrons on an adjacent table painted a similar picture.
Excellent coffee delivered piping-hot. A key attribute for this time of the year.
The choice came down to the Chorizo Omelette or the more filling, Colcannon brunch from Calliope Road's concise brunch/lunch menu - my heart said brunch but fortunately, my appetite craved omelette. The chorizo could have been more plentiful, yet the omelette was very good, as was the ciabatta. No accompanying condiments to speak of though - thankfully the omelette had the flavour combination down-pat.
Most Surprising Dish
I was obviously hankering protein - the Chinese omelette stacked full of vegetables and cashew nuts was the next cab off the rank. If a quick bite is your thing, Calliope Road Cafe also offers a decent array of counter-food offerings and at a kids' eye-level, don't expect to take the wee-ones there just for a fluffy!
The Bottom Line
Devonport's village isn't the only place to grab a tasty meal. Take the stroll up Victoria Street and turn left onto Calliope for great coffee and a good array of well priced brunch options.
A Reason to Return
I was halfway through 'NZ Property Investor' Magazine - a return visit to Calliope Road Cafe is a given if I'm to start building the empire.
