On Thursday 7th March 2013 it was my Mothers Birthday and as locals in Matakana area we support local businesses. We had had a fabulous lunch that day in Matakana and proceeded to go out for coffees after lunch. SANDSPIT CAFE came to mind as we had not been there for a long time and what a beautiful little spot it is. Apon arrival we noticed only two tables in there as we approached the front counter. A short ginger man approached us with a sort of flustered attitude and said "table for 4 is it?" We replied "No thank you we were hoping for just a few coffees" He then replied "Is it take away" We said no and with a bee in his bonnet replies " oh well it is a table for four then." My family and I then sat down anyway and didn't think much of his service at this point. We were never offered or appointed to a drinks menu and it sprung to mind that usually for just coffee you would pay at the counter and then take a seat. Anyway after a few minutes the only waitress came over and asked if we were ready to order. I said to her " How can we order we have no menu or drinks list?" she then walked away and make a remark to her manager "short man" He then came over in a huff and said to my family "Do you have a problem with my staff?" Shocked at that i replied " NO! but i do have a problem with your service and your attitude towards your customers." With that he said "Well if you don't like it leave and don't come back!" Big mistake buddy..... At that point my family and I stood up and without a word left. How dam rude is that. You think in a small town being at little old Sand spit you would never treat customers like that. I think the guy certainly has a few things to learn about hospitality. And first and foremost should loose his frantic pist off poor attitude before approaching customers.I DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING TO SANDSPIT CAFE. What a disappointment. I have had 6 generations in my family in Matakana and have seen that cafe go through new management t

We visited Cafe Sandspit on Friday 26 October 2012, having noted the review by Lorne written in 2011. Reviews such as Lorne's are very poor since they cannot allow for a change of ownership. The current owner of Cafe Sandspit has only had this cafe for four weeks. We had absolutely wonderful meals, equal to anything that one can find in Auckland. They were tasty, beautifully presented and reasonably priced. The service was excellent and the view wonderful. We have occasionally eaten at the Cafe Sandspit for many years and would have to say that that the current owner/chef is by far the best. We will be going back, and recommend that anyone staying in the area should give themselves a treat by going to the Cafe Sandspit. Russell, Auckland

This cafe is in a great position, being right on the waters edge, however, that is a s far as the good news goes.
The food is mediocre at best, and is completely overpriced for what you get.
The prices they charge are similar to what you would pay for a good meal in a decent Auckland city restaurant, however this place is NOT a decent restaurant, nor is it in Auckland city.
They did not even deliver what I had ordered, giving me a completely different item from the menu.
The waiting staff tried their best, but from what I heard during the meal every sentence had the word "sorry" in it as they were apologising for the kitchens short comings.
I will not be going back to this place and I would not recommend this alleged restaurant to anyone, ever!
As a foot note, the next day I had a severe upset stomach, with the normal consequences.
