BYO Restaurants in Auckland

If you're tired of having to scrutinize the wine lists every other time you go for a night out or simply want to pair that great bottle of wine you've recently snagged with some equally delicious food (minus the hassle of actually having to cook it yourself, naturally), you should probably print out our recommended list of the best BYO restaurants in Auckland and carry it in your wallet at all times. This Auckland BYO Restaurant Guide will prove to be indispensible, especially as we've covered all sorts of restaurants from classic French or rustic Italian to cheap and cheerful Asian eateries that accept BYO wines. Bring your own bottle of wine to any of our BYO restaurant picks in Auckland; not only will you save time getting down and dirty with choosing what you'd like to order, they'll even uncork that special bottle you've brought in for you.
Open all year round, Chinese BYO favourite, Canton Cafe has become an Auckland legend that is renowned for its consistently flavourful Chinese food - unsurprising considering how its head chef works the wok all 365 days of the year. If that isn't commitment to food, we don't know what is! Like most typically traditional Asian restaurants, the wine list tends not to be very adventurous, so BYO wine would be perfect for a night out at Canton Cafe of Kingsland, Auckland.

Me Ne Frego is one of the most polarising restaurants in Auckland - it's an eatery that you'd either love or hate and never feel quite indifferent about. We have a love-hate relationship with this Italian BYO restaurant in Epsom, Auckland ourselves; while the hot-cold behaviour of owner and chef Steve can be a little off-putting and a lot confusing at times, his morbid sense of humour that translates into the quirky decor of Me Ne Frego and his unforgettably scrumptious food keep us coming back to this BYO restaurant for more. An aged bottle of Italian wine would do wonders here; Steve himself is a big fan of his alcohol as evident from the prominence if it in his dessert menu, so it's no wonder that his food pairs perfectly with good BYO wine.

Mekong Neua Thai Restaurant is yet another Auckland institution that is well-loved for serving up what many Auckland locals claim to be the best Laotian and North Eastern Thai food - the BYO policies merely come as a bonus, of course. Here's where white wine enthusiasts can rejoice; at the BYO Mekong Neua Thai Restaurant, remember to bring over your fruitier whites that the sour-spicy elements in Mekong Neua's food will bring the best out of.

You can't go wrong with this popular Auckland favourite when it comes to finding good Japanese food in Auckland Central. Nishiki Robata-Yaki Bar of Freemans Bay (or Botany, if you're in that part of Auckland). The Japanese regard highly their alcohol, so the selection at this Auckland based Japanese BYO restaurant is solid and even offers a selection of Japanese fruit-distilled vodkas, but BYO wine is more than welcome too at a very reasonable $2.50 corkage fee per head.

Although Sitar Indian Restaurant had fallen off Auckland's trending radar, this BYO restaurant quietly continues to serve up the same solid Indian fare that it had been delighting Auckland locals with since 1986. If you're looking for an Indian restaurant to BYO wine to, give this old favourite a go. You may just warm up to the authentic flavours and relaxed ambience of this BYO restaurant and end up part of the crowd of loyal regulars that patronise this restaurant.

This hidden gem tucked away on a dubiously quiet street in Clover Park of Manukau, Auckland was brought to attention when it first won the Best Indochinese award in Metro Magazine's inaugural Top 50 Asian Restaurants back in 2008. Amusingly enough, this BYO restaurant still doesn't get too much traffic because of its remote location. A shame, we think; with its very affordable corkage fee, thoughtful service and - most importantly - yummy authentic Cambodian food that pairs impeccably with that bottle of white, Sopheara deserves a spot in our top BYO Restaurants in Auckland list.

There always will be a debate on or pursuit for the most authentic ethnic restaurants in Auckland city, but one can always rest assured that they wouldn't go wrong with Sri Pinang Malaysian Restaurant. And what can be more satisfying than enjoying a glass of hand-picked wine to go with? This decades-old BYO restaurant is a popular favourite with the people of Auckland, though, so remember to book in advance before you turn up, or you may just miss the opportunity to savour your BYO bottle that night!
