Bread and Butter Bakery & Cafe, Grey Lynn - Cafe Review

Nestled behind Farro Fresh in Grey Lynn is a gem of a cafe that may be the first place in 100-ish reviews to have rumbled this reviewer!

One of the more interesting brunch menus I've seen in some time. There's nothing on there that's overly different to most good menus around, but it's the little details that excite. Like the poached plum with the French toast, or the pesto with the mushrooms. Talking of the mushrooms, they are delicious but rich. Be prepared! The Eggs Benedict was given high praise by a seasoned Eggs Benedict fan, and my smashed avocado with dukkah, and poached egg on sourdough was almost perfect, though I'd keep the bread as one long piece and spread the avocado across to keep it simpler. In short, there are half a dozen other things I want to try on this menu as soon as I get a chance.

There are some great smoothie options on offer, but we went with the standard flat whites. I'd read elsewhere that the coffees were Bread & Butter's weak point, and I tend to agree. There wasn't much flavour, and all seemed overly milky.

Love the fit out of the place, especially considering that it's in a building that's plonked next to a Mitre 10 and loading docks. It is pretty noisy when busy, but grab one of the shared bench tops near the door and you're away. Next time, it's tempting to get a group together and dominate the plate room to the left of the entrance. Who's keen?

A bit frantic to start - we waited around for a while to be seated, but fast and friendly thereafter. This may have been because I'd been rumbled as a reviewer (can't imagine how he had any idea who I was, but the waiter talked only to me out of the three of us, kept mentioning reviews and giving high marks. Coincidence or not, it was about as subtle as one of their filled donuts).

The breakfasts were uniformly great, but it's picking a 'take home' treat that really makes the visit special.

The Bottom Line

There's a lot of greatness on offer at Bread and Butter Bakery & Cafe. Get someone dedicated to sorting newcomers on arrival, fix the coffee and it'll be pretty much perfect.
