My partner and myself went there with a coupon on Friday night. The waitress who served us definitely knew her beers however the beer glass provided to us was wet and had water inside it.
We ordered the croquette of Gruyere and Cheddar and they were cold and the cheese inside them was hard and cold and not melted enough.
I ordered a chicken and leek pie where the pastry was nice and crispy on the outside but too soggy and uncooked underneath.
My partner's main was Seafood Waterzooi in which they gave us exactly 2 tiny morsels of beautifully cooked snapper, 3 mussels and 2 prawns and one measly tiny potato. 70% of the dish consisted of a white creamy sauce. This dish also came with a few pieces of calamari which was not part of this dish!!
All in all, the beer was excellent but I would never eat here again!!
I took my mum (who is visiting from Canada) here for lunch twice last week and frankly I'm surprised at the reviews it's received. The service we had both times was spot on: very attentive but not over-bearing. As for the food, it was fantastic on both occasions! Especially loved the salt and pepper calamari, which was super tender and came with a really tasty sauce, and the Belgian crepes. Whatever issues they may have had seem to have been worked out. Will definitely be going back!
My last visit to Blankenberge in Takapuna was very disappointing.
We've been a couple of times previously to take opportunity of their specials -- which are pretty good value for money.
However, the service at the place has always been mediocre and food-wise, okay.
I have not been back since my last visit due to the lousy service I got. My partner ordered one of the mains which was served with risotto. When I tasted his risotto, I found it to be undercooked (it was crunchy & grainy). I brought this to the attention of the waitress who brought it back to the kitchen. A few minutes later, the waitress comes back with the same dish. The chef apparently told her that the risotto is meant to be like that. I disputed the chef's explanation as the risotto was clearly undercooked. The waitress though, was just at a lost with what to do.
I thought it very poor that the chef had not even tasted the food to check whether or not it was cooked. Otherwise, one has seriously question the chef's ability to cook if they cannot even cook risotto.
I would recommend going to another branch of Belgian Beer cafe... Although, pick them well as unfortunately, not all are of the same calibre.
A nice friendly bar. Recommend the mussels and a beer on a sunny day.
I went to Blankenberge Belgian Beer Cafe last week and was very impressed with the service. Our barman was very attentive and unlike some bar staff, actually looked like he was enjoying his job! Our drinks were great and our group had a great time.
Blankenberge Belgian Beer Cafe is definitely worth a visit - particularly for the buckets of Hoegarden and Moules Frites!!
