The Birdcage Bar & Restaurant, Freemans Bay - Restaurant Review

After being moved twice to make way for the construction of the Victoria Park Tunnel, the historic Birdcage has now reopened as a sleek pub and restaurant. The interior is a stylish combination of original brickwork and more modern décor, and the external plaza out the front is a real suntrap. Just be prepared for a fair bit of traffic noise from the motorway viaduct soaring above.

Well-organised and efficient, and full marks for deducting the cost of our largely uneaten pizza off the bill.

Drinks List
On tap there’s Moa, Peroni, Erdinger and Old Mout Cider, and more Moa and Three Boys craft beer options are available in bottles. The winelist is admirably broad, with many interesting varietals, and a good selection of half-bottles. It’s just a shame our dining experience didn’t match the restaurant quality of the drinks list.

Feeling Peckish?
Four gourmet pizzas ($20) are on offer, but we were very disappointed with the one featuring chorizo, capers and prawns – oily, greasy, and with too much cheese and sauce smothering the base. Lunch options being ferried to other tables looked pretty good, including lemon-salted squid with a palm sugar, chilli and coriander dressing ($20 with salad). For groups, there’s the Kai Moana board, a pricey $67.50 shared platter of seafood.

The Bottom Line
It’s great to see one of Auckland’s iconic pubs reopen, but at present the classy combination of a great winelist and branding from Moët & Chandon champagne is at odds with the more pedestrian food. With stellar recent openings nearby in Ponsonby Central and Britomart, the Birdcage definitely needs to lift its game.
