The ViewAuckland Review
Stuck with what to buy your nearest and dearest for a birthday or Christmas? How about a gift voucher from Bian Sushi on Symonds St? Along with Banzai Sushi just up the road, we reckon it’s one of the best sushi places in town. In fact, the only thing remotely wrong with Bian is that it’s a bit small. Come during lunchtime, and you might find the few indoor or outside tables already busy. Don’t worry though – the sushi is still worth eating as takeaway. During mid-morning or mid-afternoon you should be fine for a seat.
Like Banzai Sushi, the approach at Bian is to serve yourself from the array (around 30 different varieties) that’s laid out on the compact front counter. Expect a much wider range than at your local shopping mall sushi emporium. More adventurous palates can dive into the flying fish roe or creamy lobster salad varieties. If that sounds too scary, the Maguro nigiri, or raw tuna, comes as a super fresh chunk around 2cm square. The Tataki nigiri (seared beef) is also great, and because of ongoing demand the sushi is always super fresh.
Indvidual pieces of sushi are all priced from $1.50 to $2 and there’s also a wider range of Japanese food including Bento Boxes ($21-23), Donburi rice bowls ($9-13) and Udon noodle soups (9-11) available. And unlike Banzai Sushi just up the road, you can also have a beer or a sake with your meal.
Bian Sushi is regularly voted best in town by a certain Auckland-based daily newspaper. We can only agree. Don’t blame us if you end up keeping any Bian gift vouchers for yourself.
