Bellota, SKYCITY - Restaurant Review

Vibe

With Belotta’s friendly Spanish-speaking staff and Spanish heavy drinks list it’s very easy to believe you’re actually in San Sebastian and not downtown Auckland. The cosy space comprising of bays with banquettes and booths, dimmed lighting and authentic live music give Belotta a warm and inviting vibe.

Service

Unpretentious and laidback, Belotta’s wait and kitchen staff come by way of Spain and Brazil to deliver Peter Gordon’s inspired tapas menu. The good service and a great attention to detail with the presentation of the food and little extras like the Spanish G & T complete with the juniper berries and lime peel are some of what make Belotta a cut above other tapas bars.

Feeling peckish?

Pintxos, the small bread based tapas are priced around the $5-$6 mark with more substantial tapas around $10-$12 meaning you can sample a great range of delicious Spanish flavours for a good price. We really liked the bread and crostini with hazelnut Romesco sauce, Brandada- salted cod fish alioli ($11), plate of assorted sliced chorizo and Jamón cuts ($17) lamb ribs with apple ($12.5) and crumbed deep-fried goats cheese, runny honey and toasted almonds ($11).

What’s on Tap?

Sangria by the jug and Estrella is available on draught, but there is an excellent offering of bottled beer from Spain, Mexico and Argentina - you don't see Quilmes in many Auckland bars. The wine list also has a Spanish touch with sherry which is recommended for accompanying tapas, and wines from great wine making regions like Navarra and Rioja. For cocktail fans there are classic Spanish concoctions including Pisco Sour and Caipirinha.

A Reason to Return

Locally-made, award-winning chorizo served on bread with capsicum and onion relish and goat’s milk cheese made in Catalonia served with honeycomb and pecans – washed down with a glass of cava.

The Bottom Line

The food is outstanding and the service some of the best we’ve had in Auckland. Belotta is also a cool and laidback addition to the city’s nightlife scene with an authentic atmosphere (especially Wednesday thru Friday with the addition of the live music) and interesting drinks.
