My hiking group visited here again for my 2nd time for lunch, the menu is exactly the same as dinner time. Choose your meat balls and then what salad, fries or sauce you want with it, in a bun or with mash and then tick your wipe off sheet. The prices are a little steep at $16 for a bowl of coleslaw with 3 small meatballs but that could be Ponsonby prices. They haven’t increased since I first came I don’t think. They do some great soda cocktails here too hence the restaurant name. I thought this place might be a gimmick that doesn’t last but its still here a few years later. Maybe the busy location helps, maybe the interesting drinks in mason jars, I still love the old school class room looking furniture too.The service is miles better from when they first opened which is a great improvement. Get along and consume some balls.

Bedford and Soda are known for their cocktails and they never disappoint in that regard. My absolute favourite cocktail is their Wolfberry Sour which is made up of gin, berries and a toasted marshmallow to top it off. They also have great new special sodas/cocktails on their black board each day, definitely recommend giving those a go also. I've only eaten at Bedford a couple of times but I really enjoy their meatballs, they are delicious.
If you want somewhere to dine quickly, this isn't the place for you. Service is often a little on the slow side but the staff are very friendly and if you're happy waiting over a cocktail or two I recommend you head to bedford.

Love the concept here. Good fun and little fuss. Our group of four arrived at Bedford Soda a bit late (initially planning on going to El Sizzling Chorizo (also in Ponsonby Central) but the wait seemed too long so choose the meatball option and glad we did. Staff are cool with out being arsey and pretty open with their suggestions (which is always appreciated in my book).
Cocktails are nice and strong and the actual food itself - fantastic especially when in a situation like we were just wanting to talk and chew without getting stuck into a big meal. I'd definately return to Bedford Soda. Nice one.

When I read the review in the Viva I thought this is a cool old school hip place I have to get to. So I booked my group of 7 in later that week. The menu’s remind me of school crossed with a Hotel room service menu. This place is not for you if you don’t like meatballs, because that’s what they do – meatballs! There does seem to be a craze at the moment for these little morsels.

Ordering is fun and done with a felt-tip pen, which you use to mark the options to let the kitchen know if you want your meatballs served on their own or on mash, polenta, spaghetti, risotto - or maybe you'd like them in sliders, or as a sub, with sauces or without; with a salad or fries. But don’t go hungary because it was a long long wait to just place our order let alone get our food and one friend had to wait till we were nearly finished before he got his.

There are just five choices for the meatballs - chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian and a daily special – I got the special which was pork with scallops with a sauce. For sides I ordered the fries and Caesar salad which were just predictable and not any different to any other average diner.

My friend inquired on the vegeball which was a mix of chickpeas, lentils, cottage cheese and spices. It was soft and flavourful and teaming it up with a pesto. I thought hers looked dry and boring as a sub though.
Drinks seem to take a while from ordering to delivery at Bedford. We ordered the watermelon cocktail which was nice but they clearly made their money with the loads of ice filling the carafs. I loved the touch of the little glass tea cups you drank from.

Bedford Soda & Liquor is relaxed, approachable, and much less intimidating than you might think for a bar in Ponsonby. I think it might be a gimmick that doesn’t stick round long though. I could make the meatballs better myself. I definitely didn’t think with the really really slow service that it’s a place I will write home about.

I wasnt sure what to expect from Bedford Soda & Liquor but was impressed from the outset. The decor is great and the service excellent. The food was very tasty and quick which was great as we had kids with us. The pumpkin salad was a winner with me where the kids prefered the chicken meatballs with risotto and red sauce. The lamb special meat balls were yummy too. Oh, and the wine glasses are very cool!

Had to check Bedford Soda out for myself after all the hype and so on a windy Monday night after an early flick, headed along to Ponsonby Central expecting the precinct to be fairly busy but pleased to see that there were a few tables spare at this eatery.
Great cocktail and drinks menu (even the non-alcoholic drinks sounded awesome), but Emersons it was followed by a lovely drop of Merlot.
As for the food, I enjoyed the special of the day which was the lamb meatballs with a yogurt sauce, all served on risotto...3 meatballs were enough last night but in future would be ordering a bit more. The pumpkin salad was also fantastic.
Bedford Soda's staff were also enthusiastic and far from marks right there. Go for it - you'll enjoy the experience!
