Baduzzi, Wynyard Quarter - Restaurant Review

The Food

Baduzzi boasts a traditional Italian menu that would probably throw someone who is used to the more… shall we say… La Porcetta style of Italian dining. Executive Chef Ben Bayly’s menu is not immediately accessible, but certainly offers up some interesting choices. We really liked the lamb and wild thyme meatballs with preserved lemon, as well as the delicious saffron gnocchi with burnt butter and marjoram. Strangely, the much talked about crayfish meatballs tasted very bland to us, and a few of the other small plates we ordered felt small for what you pay for them. It’s reasonably priced overall though, and we recommend the desserts to finish, particularly the stunning dark chocolate semifreddo.

I like how their wines are offered in different price brackets on the menu rather than just by type. A good selection of NZ and Italian wines by the glass too.

We sat outside on a warm end-of-summer day and it was really rather lovely. It’s a shame you can’t see the water, as that would really have topped it off. The interior of the restaurant is beautifully designed.

Patchy. We had a short amount of time to lunch and advised the waiter as such. However, we had to wait for menus, wait for drinks and call the waiter over to take our orders, despite it being only mildly busy. We had the usual ‘small plates’ issue of everything arriving at once, which meant for some fun table arranging.

The desserts were something else. Can’t wait to try their tiramisu.

The Bottom Line

Expectations were high for this one and whilst I’m not sure they were met, Baduzzi does definitely have a lot of things going for it. A worthy little Italian brother to The Grove.
