Mention pies and you will frequently be met with raised eyebrows and “Have you tried The Fridge?” coupled with a knowing look and a pointed stare. It would of course to be remiss of us not to include this popular Kingsland cafe, a regular on the Metro top 50 and home to the Rolls Royce of pies. Large, stately and oozing great taste they may just be the best. Their Beef & Guinness, Thai Chicken Curry and Moroccan Lamb (just to name a few) are among 800-1000 pies that fly out the door each week, with their famous Chicken and Mushroom the biggest crowd pleaser.

Open 7 days a week, with a friendly buzz, great food and a nice sunny outdoor eating area hidden out the back you can see how this place has become something of an institution. At $8.50 they’re not the cheapest but nobody expects them to be when its craftsmanship and parts are of this calibre.

Recommendation: Potato, Mozzarella and Mince. Hot mince and rich, buttery potato mash, very lightly peppered with a layer of melted cheese; all encased in a golden, delectable pastry.

2014 will be remembered as the year MASU Restaurant took Auckland by storm. In the lead up to Auckland Restaurant Month, we spoke to the critically acclaimed chef behind the success story.
