Auckland's Best Donuts

Auckland's Best Donuts

If there's one food-group that all View New Zealand staff worship it's the humble donut. Auckland tastebuds in particular (and gym owners everywhere) will be pleased to note that the donut is the latest food offering to undergo a renaissance; after a month waddling across Auckland's suburbs here are our picks for the best donut purveyors across the Auckland region.

Old-school charm: Devonport Stone Oven Bakery, Devonport
One thing's for sure - the German's know their sugar-inspired treats. The 'Jam Berliner' is one of Germany's very best exports and is produced in all it's glory at this Devonport institution.

Latin Temperament: Serafin Cafe, El Faro
The Auckland dining palette is now a proudly diverse-beast. It's hardly surprising therefore that churros, the Spanish fried donut, has become a popular choice for after-dinner indulgence. Even better con chocolate - buenisimo. Borth Serafin and El Faro should see you right.

Recession-proof: The Baker's Cottage, Kingsland
At a mere $2 a pop, the sugary cream-filled delight produced by the Baker's Cottage team has been as much a part of Kingsland's fabric as, well, dare I say it, Eden Park.

Fancy Pants: Cafe Hanoi, Cibo, The Grove, Pillinis
When a cafe or bakery offering just won't do. Fusion or traditional, there's no escaping the appeal of the donut. The above are just a few of the fine Auckland restaurants that regularly feature donut variations on their menu.

Weekend Warrior: Little & Friday
Prior to Kim Evan's opening her dainty little cafe, Belmont (yes, look the suburb up) was a culinary backwater. Now - if you love your (savoury and sweet) treats, it's at the epi-centre of the foodies universe. You'll find at least 25 reasons to keep coming back to Little & Friday, but if donuts are your thing, there's actually none better than their vanilla cream and jam filled offering. At $4.50 they're up there - but oh, so worth it. Little & Friday's combination of deliciousness also takes out the unofficial View New Zealand title for the best donut in Auckland.
