The gastro pub genre had been burgeoning in Auckland over the past couple of years. Rightfully so, too - we've just about had enough of having Auckland's pubs and bars serve us dubious foodstuff to go with our after-work drinks. The gastro pub concept of creating innovative, delicious and hearty food was understandably embraced by the people of Auckland in no time. In celebration of great pub grub (not quite grubby any more, admittedly), we present our recommended Auckland Gastro Pub restaurants list, populated by gastro pubs that will be able to serve up great food alongside your drinks.
Introducing The Gibson, our recommendation list's South Auckland gastro pub representative. This pub local may dish out some sophisticated pub grub (slow roasted NZ pork belly with feijoa and apple sauce - if this ain't classic gastro pub food, what is?), but we love it all the more for the faultless service and genuine interaction the staffers have with both regulars and first-timers alike. An Auckland suburban locale doesn't get any better than this.
26 Uxbridge Road,
Dominique Parat, notable for his contribution to the Auckland restaurant and pub scene with Isobar, Ibiza, Woody’s and the well-known GPK restaurants across Auckland suburbs is back with his latest venture, the Banque Restaurant, Bistro and Gastro Bar. Inspired by the French, Banque Restaurant offers seriously good gastro pub fare under the helm of head chef Matt Cook.
311 Remuera Road,
We couldn't possibly cover the best gastro pubs in Auckland city without mentioning the Belgian Beer Cafe franchise. One of our favourites in Auckland is De Post Belgian Beer Cafe, conveniently situated in the heart of the Mt Eden action. We think the pub grub in De Post recommendable because it's gastro pub food is gourmet without being pretentious, with mussels prepared over a dozen different ways to pair with one of their many specialty Belgian brews available on the tap - right here in Auckland.
466 Mt Eden Road,
For those times when you seek not only an upbeat, welcoming atmosphere, but also the food to do your chilled mug of beer justice, there is Degree Gastrobar. Seated right on the edge of the Viaduct Harbour in Central Auckland, Degree Gastrobar is one of Auckland's gastro pub hallmarks, keeping true to the supersized pub grub portions without compromising true quality in its classic food.
204 Quay Street,
It is only right that a list recommending the best gastro pub food in Auckland includes the delicious pub food from Mac Brewbar's Nuffied Street Trading Company. With a gastronomical menu as sophisticated as the clientele that frequents the Nuffield Street Newmarket district, Mac Brewbar Nuffield Street makes for the perfect stop after a long day of Auckland shopping.
25 Nuffield Street,
Opened by Dennis Wiley, also head honcho of Shorebirds, Hammerhead and Mink Cafe, Squid Row Gastro Bar has some of the more decadent seafood platters we've seen in an Auckland gastro pub or bar. Unsurprisingly so, too, considering the number of successful seafood restaurants Dennis had managed under his belt. We'd come to Squid Row Gastro Bar for some of Auckland's freshest gastro seafood in an open, unassuming environment.
