If I could give this place no stars I would... The horror story that happened to the other reviewer in Dec is absolutely believable. What I don't understand is the rating of 3 stars. This place is over priced! You may a lot for not much food and what you do get is not mexican! I could not believe the prices compared to the amount of food... I left hungry! There is no flavour, the staff are clearly about getting money and nothing else... We were given five drink samples... all unable to drink... I ordered a Tecate beer and was charged more for that than for the watery margarita my mother had... The other thing is half the menu is not mexican and the menu itself is really hard to understand... You would think you could go in and just order a couple of tacos with some beans and rice! You can't! I will never go back and I will warn all to stay away!
A MEXICAN NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE. I went to Ashi Itzcalli with a group of 22 friends at 12pm on 5th December 2010. I booked the place a month before. I had 3 meetings with owners: Eduardo and Isaak. I was promised a lunch menu and Free Mexican Guitarist.I really hate to write this, but when we arrived we found a table nicely prepared for us but with DINNER menus which is 3 times more expensive. When I requested the lunch menu Isaak told me that there were not lunch menus in the restaurant. When I told him that I would take the group to next door cafe, Isaak had found lunch menus. They were hidden behind the counter.Regarding the FREE Mexican Guitarist they demanded additional $100 from us. What a rip off. I refused to pay additional $100 and musician was told not to play for us. They are not prepared to host any private functions. They are still running a restaurant with a mentality of a food court. If you want service, Ashi Itzcalli is not for you. We had to order food and drinks individually. We had to go to the cashier one by one and placed our orders and pay for them in front.Food was not so great. Rice was undercooked, the portions of meat were so small that were hardly noticed. A truly shocking dining experience. The food and drinks were overpriced.I might forgive this if they were honest but honesty is not a name of this place. Expectations were not met, and there is not enough of a pull for me to go back.I hope this review helps the restaurant to improve their offering.
Fantastic restaurant! Originally from the USA I am used to great authentic Mexican food. The few Mexican places I’ve tried in NZ left me very disappointed. This place was absolutely amazing and satisfied my desire for great Mexican food! Fantastic quality food, great service, good atmosphere, and they went the extra mile to make our experience enjoyable. The drinks and desserts were great as well as the mains and entrees. One of the few places I ate a 3 course meal. Needless to say I’ll become a regular! I'll be spreading the word about this great place.
Had an amazing experience at Ashi Itzcalli last weekend. We were up from Hamilton visiting my sister who lives in Grey Lynn and she'd heard really good things about this Mexican restaurant so thought we'd better try it out.
Good range of tapas but the real highlight for me was the range of delicious drinks - if only we had Margaritas like this in the 'tron we'd be a happy bunch!
