Artwok has been on my 'must-try' radar since opening but it's fair to say the recent inclusion in the Metro Top 50 was the prompt I needed to finally give the Takapuna eatery a shot.
An Easter visit was called for - as half of Auckland was out of the city as expected Artwok was pretty quiet so it wasnt big on atmosphere but what was lacking there, was made up for in attentiveness and speed.
We (only two of us) opted to share a selection of plates - recommended by the staff - so tried a variety of dishes from the soup dumplings to pancakes and an exceptionally spicy chicken dish. Without question my favourite was the soup dumplings - these things are delicious but there's quite an art in terms of eating them.
Overall, very happy to have finally given Artwok a go - and as one of the few North Shore eateries in Metro's Top 50 list, have to say it's thoroughly deserved.

Another great meal at this Asian fusion on Hurstmere Road - Artwok.

This time we had the only round booth seating at the top of the stairs. Having only 6 in our group worked well in that we got to sample the whole menu at only about $40pp. Great value and we couldn't finish everything.

Green beans, eggplant, succulent Angus eye filet and chili chicken were all great dishes. The north eastern sweet and sour pork is popular.

This place is worth continuous trips to Taka for sure.

On this stretch of Hurstmere Rd populated by average bars and chain restaurants is now the best addition - Artwok. It’s surprising that the owners are from the banking industry not food but clearly foodies as this is a goldmine of flavour and presentation.

Artwok is split over two floors. The downstairs area is more casual and where you would head after work. Upstairs has a very cool large aquarium and more formal seating. I love the calligraphy brush wall and how the whole upstairs on a balmy night opens out onto a deck to make the most of this short NZ summer.

Having only 5 in our group worked well in that we got to sample the whole menu as the waiter (who was very tentative) suggested us sharing. Great value and I really was full when I left.

The Szechuan pepper flavour of the tender Wakanui beef was not my favourite dish personally just because of the flavour but others loved it. The north eastern sweet and sour pork is popular, and great — crunchy batter dressed with a palm sugar syrup.

Other dishes we had were Vermicelli and pork salad, Wontons and dumplings, Pork belly in flatbread, chicken with cashews with chilli’s you are not supposed to eat. The Hand pulled Chinese cabbage was something I have never tried and was lovely and fresh with its ginger punch to clear those other strong flavours.

I’m not a beer drinker but had to try the Good George Brewing Sparkling Ale which I actually loved and what made it more novel was the science beacon it was served in.

This place is worth the trip to Takapuna so get up there.
