Used to be the best, now best avoided.
With so much choice for good coffee in Auckland, you would think that customer service would make all the difference.
Not so at Altura. Rude counter staff and condescending management make this an altogether unpleasant experience.
It is sad when a once-great cafe falls so far.

Altura Café and Roastery is one of my GO to cafes because they do, as you would expect, FANTASTIC coffee!!!. I am on a decaf kick at the moment and some of the coffees are just terrible...Not here though. This is the BEST decaf coffee in Auckland in my opinion. The staff are ALWAYS great. Smiling and efficient. They always have heaps of staff on so you never wait long for a meal. We often change something on offer on the menu and we never have a problem. The food is great....the menu offerings are wide ranging from lunch dishes and all day breakfast choices. it IS in an industrial area but it still has a really good vibe about it. It is Always busy. doesn't matter what day of the week you come, its always packed and deservedly so. I have been going here for years and it has been consistently good.

Went here on the weekend for lunch (have been here a few other times too). The place was so busy and you often have to walk a few minutes to the cafe. As soon as we sat at a table someone came and poured us some water and asked if we had ordered, which we had. We ordered paninis which came out quickly and were delicious! Altura is a bit pricey but reasonable for the quality of food and service. Grabbed a takeaway hot choc on the way out and that was lovely too.

Altura used to be a regular of mine until we moved offices about 6 months ago - I really liked the coffee but their service was also something else.
Paid a return visit to Altura yesterday and very encouraged to see those same great traits were still there on display.

Not only damn good coffee but the food is worth a visit in it's own right. Lunch today was humming - which proves the Altura secret is out and it's obviously not only me that was impressed.
My meal choice of the corn fritters and bacon with avocado proved to be a good'un. Generous portions, fresh, nice accompanying salsa salad - can't got wrong.
I only wish there were more good cafe offerings in Albany. Altura - spot on.

Love the coffee - can't stand the food:(
Had a meeting here over lunch and ordered the chicken, pesto and bacon roll which I had say the bread was as hard as a sun baked dung brick was an understatement...c'mon Altura, you've got a great venue and your staff are friendly but you really need to spruce up your act on the food side - I've now been to Altura a few times to eat and unfortunately had a dud time of it.

best coffee on the shore (helps if you are the source I suppose!). Can get really busy so service times are sometimes on the slow side. I really like the Blends on offer at Altura - if you're a big coffee drinker you'll appreciate the variety. Food looks good but I've found sometimes a bit too plain tasting - I can live off coffee alone so Altura suits me!

i do not understand. why they are so busy. the reason i think they are head office of altura coffee and do have big coffee roaster inside cafe.
First, coffee was not tat good - ordered Short Macchiato and 1 flat white and 1 trI'm flat white. OK barista extracted shots fine enough but he did not warm espresso cup enough therefore when i got min- coffee was COLD ( no knowledge about how to make proper coffee) also 2 flat white just came up and waitress did not know which one was trim - i've sent back and she came back and point one was trim. i bet none of those coffee was trim ( barista just made it up, i can taste trim and non- trim milk) . Second, i had steak sandwich- very disappointed as they did not marinated steak. it was just tasteless steak sandwich ever. Last, staff - i've felt staff is bit too arrogant especially young staff. To sum up i would recommend people to go other cafe such as Mozaik cafe or Columbus coffee . im sure they do have better food and better coffee.

With two kids under three in tow, finding a cafe offering both good food and fairly efficient service on the North Shore is often quite an issue. Our Sunday morning staple has become the Devonport Stone Oven, not because the food nor service is anything to write home about, but because there is an ok children's area, and usually we just grab some items of the deli and occupy the kids for a wee while.

Hearing about some good child friendly cafes on the city side, we were inspired to check out a few cafes in the area and branch out a bit. We'd heard good things about Altura cafe (on this site and in the latest edition of Metro Magazine), so packed up and gave it a go.

Coffee roasting is done on site so you can imagine the smell - especially for coffee lovers. Busy morning, but staff were really outstanding and helpful - and in my mind a real credit to the owners.

My choice of the cinnamon french toast with bacon was a little disappointing but my partners breakfast crumble was superb (although after tasting it I don't know which one would have been the healthiest!). My daughter had the kids hotcakes - with marshmallows no less - as well as the obligatory fluffy. Our coffees were exceptional - although you would expect that wouldn't you.

Only slight was that there is no real kids area but otherwise good value cafe worth a visit.

This Cafe was recommended and was a little disappointing.... The Coffee and hot Chocolate were good.. The cafe was full when we arrived but we found a seat.... By the time food arrived the cafe had emptied (about an 1hr later). The food arrived Egg benedit and BLT which looked fantastic but was luke warm... so that was a little disappointing.... I had heard about this cafe and was expecting great food, great service at a great price.... however it was OK service with OK food - however the price was reasonable...

Not sure I would go again...

Have visited this place several times, sometimes just for a coffee and muffin. Coffee is excellent, muffins are also very good. Have eaten brunch there recently and found the meal was nicely presented and taste was good. Service there is always very good, staff go out of their way to smile and be helpful.

Altura is just about the best place on the Shore for afternoon tea/coffee. They serve excellent coffee that is hard to beat anywhere in Auckland. Despite the time of day their variety of muffins, scones and cakes are always fresh. Their decor is typical of a place that is proud of its many makes of coffee and, if you don't want to (or unable to), take your coffee 'al fresco' there is plenty of indoor seating. A highly recommended Cafe to just pop in and eat. We've lunched there too but that is for another review.

Went to Altura for breakfast last Saturday with family, there were 13 of us including 3 children.

Restaurant was very busy so there were lots of staff working and they were all very welcoming and friendly. As staff were busy we did have a bit of a wait to place a drinks order and eventually went up to the counter to ask for a server. The high chair we asked for never arrived so we found one for baby ourselves.

I asked and was told the coffee was made with fair trade beans. I hope this was accurate as the server seemed a little unsure. The coffee was just divine and we all had a second cup after our meals.

Considering the large group we were quite impressed when after placing our order, our breakfasts were all delivered fairly promptly and almost all at the same time.

I ordered the French toast with poached fruits which I would definately recommend and will order again next time. Menu was large enought that there was something for everyone and all meals were presented nicely and thoroughly enjoyed.

Two small mix-ups. The 'Nude breakfast' was described on the menu as having 'leg ham'. When it arrived with shaved ham we enquired and told it was 'shaved leg ham' which we though was a bit misleading. Also, we were told the French toast came with banana which it didn't. This worked out well in the end as it was served with plenty of poached fruits so banana would have been overkill anyway.

Staff were doing a great job in a busy bustling atmosphere and the huge selection of coffee beans and accessories were fun to look through.

Next time I'd probably prefer to go with a smaller group but would love to go back to Altura Espresso Cafe for another meal.
