Altar Cafe

dined at Altar cafe twice now and on both occasions had a fairly mediocre experience. The last time I went I had the lemon chicken sandwich - good, but quite tight on the chicken. Service has been ok but have to say there are plenty of better cafes in Mt Eden than Altar Cafe

Had a Big Breakfast last weekend - it was served up lukewarm !
Couldn't say anything cos we were invited by the sister in law who chose the place.

A nice environment, and good service.
My time there was plesent and i will be going back next time i am in the area.

I hope the new owner of Altar reads this - constructive criticism I promise. We went recently to Altar (since it has been sold) and I have to say I was sadly disappointed. No longer do they serve free range anything from what I asked, this is a big thing for me. I only eat free range eggs, bacon and chicken and I would hope and wish it is a big thing for other kiwis alike. If we don't demand it then they will save measly pennies and lose customers by serving something less than what people expect...this is not a good way to do business from my point of view. I gave it a 3 star based on all excellent bits to the restaurant and loved this place, again my fave cafe in NZ but now it has fallen down the chain in my priority and I will reconsider doing weekend brunches out. Anyway, I hope they can find it more valuable to keep the customers Altar did so well to make happy by changing back to the way it was, if something isn't broken don't fix it!!! I will of course try it again if they bring back the things that matter and that is quality free range items that are more humanely farmed and have had a better life prior to my eating them, it is only fair and we need to set standards and nowadays free range isn't that much more costly so no excuses!!! there is my rant - Altar if you change these things I would like to know.

I love this place. It has become over the past year or so my favourite cafe in New Zealand...not just Auckland. They have excellent food, with excellent moral choices (ie: free range eggs adn bacon) and gluten free and wheat free options. They are always willing to make you happy and the location and venue is great. It is good value for good food and I have never had one bad experience on the food here, ever. It is always my choice on a weekend for brunch or a quick coffee and cake. Check out Altar is it is far superior to all those other so called 'cafes' in AKL.

I love this place! By far the best Cafe in not just Auckland but New Zealand. Coming from Southern California where there are restaurants galore and great ones at that, I think it tops even some of my favourite there. This place has rockin' food. Corn Beef has is amazing, eggs benedict rock, gluten free options and they are always willing to make it to order. Everything is fresh and tastes lovely. I don't usually write reviews but it's simply a wonderful place, a nice staff, pleasant environment (not too forget the patio space on a lovely day) and good coffee to boot. They also have cool stuff like dj's spinning on Sunday avo's, special course dinner deals during winter and they allow my puppy outside. I promise the food beats any of those hot places in Auckland by far! Sort of a bummer people may read this and pack it out and make it more difficult for me to get a seat...but support them.
