Al’s Deli, Auckland Central - Cafe Review

The Food

Al’s Deli had its work cut out for it from Day One, in large part due to the rather long and dominant shadow cast by a certain other deli run by an Al. However, we’re pleased to say that THIS deli is something all of its own, and, if we can be so bold, in certain areas beats its competition hands down. The bagels here are fantastic, the perfect chewy consistency. The Main, piled high with beef brisket, would be our choice of sandwich, and the poutine is the best in town, especially with brisket added – utterly sensational. We’d highly recommend the apple pie fries as a dessert option.

Drinks

A small selection of wine and beers, including some Canadian varieties. The milkshakes are good, though kind of small for $7 each. They’ve just begun doing hard shakes as well… Nutella & Irish Cream? Yeah, ok!

Vibe

Retro is the order of the day, with a predominant orange and black theme throughout. Given its location amongst the scruffy and dingy shops on Upper Queen St, it’s remarkably bright and airy, thanks mainly to its first floor location. The old-school wallpaper is something else!

Service

Good, though the two times we’ve been, there’s been some kind of mix-up or delay at the till when ordering. I imagine these will be ironed out as the business beds in. Chances are you’ll strike up a conversation with Aleks the owner who is generally hard at work ‘creating’ out front.

Highlights

The brisket truly is out of this world.

The Bottom Line

It’s not in the most accessible of locations, but a visit to Al’s Deli is definitely worth the effort. Give me brisket…..
