Tokyo Club Information

Tokyo Club, Ponsonby Central, is little Tokyo. Here, we present, urban cuisine from Tokyo, Japan’s busiest city.

We are a “Yokocho” styled bar, offering laneway dining. The Yokocho market place originates from the alleys between two main streets, where the black markets once traded. Today, they are packed with Izakaya & food stalls serving gastronomic delights, with a home- cooked ambience that customers find inviting.

Tokyo Club in Ponsonby Central is an “Izakaya” dining bar, offering ‘Yokocho’ laneway dining. The Yokocho market place originates from the alleys between two main streets, where the black markets once traded.

My two friends and I shared a platter with such things as Prawns, octopus balls, Lamb skewers, duck dumplings which were the best and a side of teriyaki chicken and rice. The must try on the drinks menu is the warm green plum wine. It actually comes with a plum in the bottom which soaks up the alcohol and BOOYA!

Tokyo Bay in Takapuna is the sister restaurant to this little gem if that’s more in your neighbourhood.

We dined here about a month ago with my Mum who was visiting from Christchurch. We took my daughter who is 2.5 years old.

Overall the experience was underwhelming.

Great dining environment but our waiter was constantly coming around to check our daughter (who is actually quite well behaved) wasn't clambering on the chairs or dropping her chopsticks on the floor. Not very kid friendly in this respect.

This would have been compensated by the food experience, however it felt like an overpriced Nishiki (a restaurant I really rate for cheap eats and informalness). Not worth the price tag, was expecting something like Ebisu but it didn't happen! Won't try it again.

Tokyo Club is such a buzzy place. Set within the confines of Ponsonby Central the place is always packed. Its a tiny restaurant in the laneway with seats at the bar where you can watch Japanese Movies, & Sumo Wrestling on the little screens built into the wall while watching the Japanese chefs prepare your dishes!! Or they have 6 tables inside or tables outside. Wherever you sit the décor is great and the service quick and friendly. The menu has small plate offerings including the fabulous Duck Dumplings and Teriyaki Lamb Skewers!! yum...they also do great Sushi and Sashimi. The Teppan choices come with salad & 4 small slices of vegetables served cold. The meats and fish are beautifully cooked though. Teriyaki Chicken was a delight and they have Pork Belly and other offerings on the main which sound lovely. You MUST have the lemon ice-cream to finish...Seriously, this is gorgeous and a beautiful way to cleanse the palate at the end. They also offer Green Tea Ice-cream as well. . The wine list is varied and they offer good Sake too. Its the sort of place where you go for a casual meal which doesn't cost the earth but its in a stylish buzzy place. We have been three times now and it has been consistently good!!
