Tin Soldier, Ponsonby - Restaurant Review
Vibe
Subtle Kiwiana touches combine with a bustling bistro-style ambience. Grab a seat
at the front window for views of Ponsonby Rd’s cinematic scroll. Look forward to a
soundtrack of 60’s classics with a lounge and Latin spin.
Service
Friendly front of house attention, but the timing of dishes from the Tin Soldier kitchen was a little
inconsistent, with a salad arriving well before our other plates. Plus points though for
allowing us to order off the large plates menu during the afternoon.
Drinks List
Craft beers from Boundary Road on tap, an excellent New Zealand skewed winelist,
and classic cocktails including a mint-laden Mojito($15). Be prepared for pricey
bottled beers though, with Little Creatures at $12 and Emerson’s at $20. Ouch.
Highlights
The master stock poached poussin ($24) grilled to smokey perfection over charcoal,
and partnered with peanuts, ginger and chilli popcorn and pickled shoots. It’s
described as ‘posh chicken satay’ by the waitress, and she’s bang on the money, with
the dish conjuring up memories of South East Asian street food.
Most Surprising Dish
The grass-fed sirloin with a trio of wild mushrooms, roasted garlic, artichoke chips
and truffle ($28). The compact medallions of meat are terrific with the smokey
creaminess of the garlic – robust flavours combined with an elegant presentation.
The Bottom Line
Blending a modern buzz with a nostalgic warmth, Tin Soldier’s updated spins on
shared plates of comfort food are a welcome addition to Ponsonby Rd’s casual, drop-
in, character.
A Reason to Return
To try out Tin Soldier’s more informal small plates including mozzarella and chorizo
croquettes ($12), and crispy prawns with furikaki, wasabi and lime mayo ($15).
Oysters served four ways ($24 for six) and the shared charcuterie plates ($18 to $48)
are another potential distractions.
