I had one of the grill dishes of chicken with mushroom sauce which came with gratin potatoes and vege. It was tasty and a good size portion. My friend had the eye fillet with Jus and it was cooked well but should have come with some veges as it only had potatoes. The service was quick. Good Sunday night off cooking.

Went there for the first time. No consultation about what wine I wanted and got served the most expensive glass of wine I've ever drunk in a pub! $25 for 2 drinks ( and one was a beer). Staff looked at me with distaste when I queried the cost and clearly couldn't be bothered looking into it, so unsure if I was overcharged or ripped off. Consequently I didn't order any more drinks and made my glass of liquid gold last longer than usual.
The atmosphere was lively, but I can identify with another review which described 'intoxicated oafs'. We also came across them. I'd call them 'intoxicated aggressive morons' but I guess all pubs get them. I got the impression they were regulars and I suppose they are your bread and butter but you won't be getting new patrons with those idiots installed in house. Being told to 'F*** off' by them doesn't really encourage me to try again.
It could have been a great experience since they have done some great things with the place, but it wasn't.

We had our Christmas Function booked with The Zookeeper’s Son last weekend and it was fabulous!! I’ve visit the bar the first time and I was overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the design of it. It’s very warm and welcoming. We got an area in the upstairs balcony, which was lovely decorated for us. It was a really busy night as 3 other groups where celebrating too. We expected some waiting time for the food because of that and as we were 40 people, but everything got served without any delay. We had the 3 course Christmas set menu. Most of us had the turkey and ham as main which were very tender and good portions. My favourite were the Salt and Pepper Squid as starter. They came in a great flavoured batter on fresh salad. Our waitress of the night (a young girl, maybe 20-25 years, dark blond long hair – I think her name was Hannah?) was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant manager came to check that everything is fine and we are enjoying ourselves. We had a small quiz and came dressed up, what wasn’t a problem at all. We really appreciated that we didn’t had a certain finishing time for our booking and so a dozen staid till late enjoying the live band and some cocktails. We felt looked after and everyone seemed to care, from booking and planning our event, over the service and food on the evening till following up, if we enjoyed our time a couple of days later.Thumbs up for the waiting staff being so hospitable and always having a smile on. It created a warm atmosphere. My daughter works as waitress in a café too and therefore I know how hard it must be on a buzzy night like this. We surely will be back next year and I am more than keen to try the a-la-carte menu with my husband.

food was passable when it came, we arrived at the Zookeeper's Son around 7pm a group of 20 of us prebooked, our food orders were taken by one member of staff which took some time to complete. In my thinking knowing that they had 20 orders to take, that they would have had more staff taking our orders, na didn't happen. We sat and waited nearly an hour for our food, getting hungrier and hungrier, when we questioned when it was likely to be arriving we were told in about another 40 minutes. Can you believe we have already waited nearly an hour and they want us to wait nearly another. Several complaints were made and the time was cut to 25 minutes, we were still not happy with this and made out thoughts known, which was that a third of us were deciding to give up cancel the ordered meal and go home hungry. This threat had our meals being plated up in the next 10 minutes, quite a change from the original 40 minutes wait we were given first, and the meals did start coming out very quickly ten minutes later. full marks for pulling their fingers out and get our meals on the table, but nil marks for making us feel as if you wanted our custom again, because to my mind if you did you would have offered nibbles and snack food while we were waiting as a gesture of goodwill or offered to taken something off the bill. Which neither of these things were offered the only thing we got was a verbal sorry it had taken so long DISGRUNTLED AQUA-AEROBIC MEMBER.

Daughters took the wife and I to the Zookeeper's Son for the wifes birthday lunch. Well can't say the food was great. The double roasted duck was fatty and horrible. Did not taste great. Best part was the gravy. The portion served needed a magnifying glass to see it. The wifes curry was just a curry, nothing spectacular. Could have bought better from an Indian takeaway. The girls salad had chunks of beetroot and a very bitter red cabbage, not great and not well presented. The prices are high for what you get. The Zookeeper's Son in my opinion is not value for money. I think stick with the burgers, not much can go wrong. Doubt if I will return.

We cannot recommend these guys highly enough. We used their upstairs as a venue for our engagement party. After running into many obstacles at other places (such as minimum spends of $5K etc) these guys were a breath of fresh air. They bent over backwards to make sure the event went off well, everyone at the party commented on their excellent service and wait staff, the platters were amazing but generally their whole attitude and willingness to help was what really impressed me. They really made our night a night to remember. Thanks so mcuh!

The Zookeeper's Son is a great bar in the 'burbs where you get a good mix of people, not too young. The staff are friendly, fun, and deliver fab service! The live music is varied and entertaining, and good for a dance. Great spot for watching international sports. The drinks menu satisfies all tastes and the food is fresh and yummy. It's probably not the closest bar to where I live in Three Kings/Mt Eden but it's worth the short taxi ride to get there!

I went to the Zookeepers son last week for dinner and drinks and had an average time. Firstly, the bar staff were chatting together and playing around for about 5 minutes before they noticed me, and when i did get served they were not very friendly, and inpatient. The food was nice, but there was hardly any meat on my ribs, would have been happy with it if the prices were a little lower. The waiter that served us at one point seemed very inpatient and his friendliness seemed fake. Most of the staff were polite and friendly, although one woman we saw a few times seemed to be literally scowling at us like we had done something wrong, and came across a bit cold and disinterested, plus it didn't help that we could hear her at one point telling off another staff member a few meters from customers. On a better note, the decor at the zookeepers son is really bold and unique, and the bar has a good atmosphere overall. There is also a good selection of beers on tap and wine although i was disappointed that they didn't have the Ned wine range...i would go back again to the Zookeepers son for squid or a pizza, the food is really good even though the prices are a little steep for pub food. I hope next time the staff would be more welcoming and we could feel more comfortable.. Will go back again but will probably have most loyalty to our other local..

On a Friday night around 10 30pm, Me and my mate just wanted to have a beer at the Zookeeper's Son for the first time. Staff was nice. Told to leave our beers on the wooden tills on the outside sofa seating area for my mate and i to have a chat while he had a smoke. 4 rude customers sat on our seats, one rude intoxicated oaf drank my beer and handed it to me. wasn't sure if he was mentally challenged or just rude. Bouncers not doing a thing about it. I even complained that they were suppose to kick out intoxicated people out. all they cared about was the " no holding your beer outside in the smoking area" ... I'm suppose to leave my beer in the open for other people to drink. Never going there again.

I was really surprised to read The View Auckland review of Zookeepers son as an overall negative one. I have had nothing but positive experiences from the many visits I have had there. The food has always been really, really good and it sounds like you were very unlucky on the day you went. I have never left there feeling I had a small or a poor meal, if anything the opposite which is why I am so surprised. They do great meal deals $10.50 pizza on a Monday, $10.50 Burger night Tuesday, Steak deal on a Wednesday, Ribs on a Thursday and Buffalo wings on a Friday - all the deals are under $15.50. I lived in the area until recently and went there regularly with work colleagues and socially with friends who lived in the area. The staff have always been very friendly and very efficient. The only time I remember food maybe taking a while was on a really busy Friday night. They also do a loyalty card which I signed up for when they opened and get food and drink vouchers emailed on my birthday and a Christmas one also. Overall I think the area was seriously lacking a pub of this standard which provides in my opinion great food, friendly staff and a relaxed fun atmosphere. Keep up the great work guys!

Great venue, great food, great location. I live locally and we have been waiting for somewhere like the Zookeeper's Son to open for ages. Always busy and staff always friendly. Between my friends and I we have just about ordered most of the menu and have yet to have a bad experience. The kids menu is great and they supply crayons and colouring in for the kids which is great for our kids. Came here last week with a few mothers from school who were both having a birthday. The nice waiter bought them a dessert each on the house which i thought was great. We will continue to come here and if you haven't been then its worth the trip. Quiz night at the Zookeeper's Son is good too.

Great place to go for a social drink after work, time out after Saturday shopping but would have to say even better to go for a meal. Had three great experiences, two with groups of 10 and once with three of us. Service was really great with friendly staff, food arrived in a good time and was excellent. Will continue to frequent, if you haven't tried it you should, also check out their loyalty card!!

I live locally and drive past the Zoo Keeper's Son every so often and think I should go there. I don't have a Rugby buddy tomorrow night can you believe?! So I intend on daring it and heading there. It looks awesome and popular but the reviews on the food sound worrying. Up your game before I come. haha. As long as you have good wine. :-)

Came home hungry after ordering the Sunday roast. The beef was tough and roast vegetables a minute amount with a about 10 peas and no sigh of any fresh veges such as pumpkin, cauliflower or broccoli. The so called roast kumera and potato consisted of just a few very tiny pieces that did not resemble a nice crunchy roast veg. Wife had fettuccine which was ok. Its a shame as we would come back to the Zoo Keeper's Son if served up a reasonable meal and live handy.Kevin.

Enjoyed the salmon for lunch at Zoo Keeper's Son. thought something went wrong when they accidently charged my card twice. Took two weeks to get my money back with no apology and having to waste time chasing them up about it.

I was at the Zookeeper's Son last Friday to hang out with some friends and enjoyed a drink after work.
Usually I like it more active, but for a socializing-evening I really enjoyed it. The staff was really nice and I and my girls like cocktails for $7.00 ;). I am not local, but friends are. So I was surprised by the mix of guests - old, young, guys and girls. Easy to find new friends. Especially if it's crowdy and you are going to share your table anyway. I think it's definitely better than Finnegan's before. Nice to have a good one outside the centre!
Will come to try your Erdinger beer soon!

I went to the Zoo keeper's Son last night and it to honest it wasn't that great. We arrived at 7:00pm and we ordered at about 7:15 and our meals didn't arrive till about 9:00pm. When our food finally arrived it really wasn't that amazing, I ordered Median steak and it came 'Mooing' on my plate. A friend of mine got steak as well and hers was still cold in the middle, very disappointing. I seriously do not recommend The Zoo Keeper's Son for meals and service but at lest they had decent drinks.

Went to get a Sunday Roast at the Zoo Keepers Son. Got ten peas, two 2cm cubed pieces of pumpkin, a stale yorkshire pudding. The meat was fine and there was a reasonable portion. Overall I felt embarrassed for the excellent staff who had to bring it to our tables. I questioned the girl serving us why there was not even as much as a whole potato let alone a roast potato on our plates. She rushed off to get some fried ones. Overall the worse value for money meal at 15.50 I have ever had in a pub across three continents. What a shame due to the environment and staff being top notch!

Rubbish - Been there twice (to give them a second chance). First time around went there with around 6 ppl all eating and drinking. Bill came to around $200 odd, ordered a platter with not much bread, asked for more and the guy asked for $2.00 extra on top after paying the bill. Needless to say I paid in 20cent pieces. Bad management.

Went there again for a few drinks, was there from 4 - 11pm. Ordered a jug at around 10.50 only to be told 5 minutes later that the place closed in 10 minutes. I can't drink that fast and the place said they were open "late". What a joke. Was offered vouchers, but refused as i never want to return.

I'm a local and will be sticking with the round about bar.

Finally! someones developed a decent bar in royal oak, its only been open a month and we've already been there a few times. the atmosphere is vibrant and warm, there are lots cosy places to hideaway in, live music on Friday nights and the best chicken wings I've ever tasted (been to the states i know!!) staff are really friendly with Heineken AND Tiger on tap, what more could you want? Its like having a city bar in the suburbs.

I made a group booking at Zoo Keeper's Son for 10 for dinner. The dinner took a long time to come out, I ordered salmon for my main but it looked more like an entree size. Very loud, could not talk to anyone! But the bar service was great and very friendly staff! Loads of parking, which makes life easier!
