The ViewAuckland Review
Despite best intentions, my instincts tell me that the Ponsonby Road version just doesn’t quite live up to its LA namesake.
With a discreet entrance and chic interior, the Whiskey, as the saying goes, is very Ponsonby Road. There’s rock memorabilia adorning the walls, but no grungy atmosphere that made the Whiskey A go-go famous the world over.
Over the years, the last transaction on many Ponsonby revelers Saturday night statements would have come courtesy of the Whiskey. At 2.30am, with a packed house, you can see why.
With such a small space, if you’re a big fan of personal space then on a busy night it’s probably not going to be for you—otherwise, be prepared to mingle!
Earlier in the year, the Whiskey was forced to close its doors for a wee while because of underage drinking. No minors in attendance this night … just.
There was, however, an interesting cross section: Canadian backpackers, stag parties, a small gay grouping and more than a few young lusties—diversity that is not often seen amongst many Ponsonby bars.
The drinks are a little pricey, but with a comprehensive list of great cocktails (around 20 or so), before long you won’t be in a position to care.
The well-dressed staff are here to perform—and perform they do. Full of flair, it’s obvious they are enjoying what they’re doing.
More ad exec than Alice Cooper, The Whiskey’s more about having fun and getting acquainted. And there’s no harm in that now is there?
