Arriving at the Tasting Shed is like arriving at some exclusive retreat and really cute at sunset. A small Wedding Reception was set up in the Conservatory when we arrived, what a perfect location for it.

The huge blackboards of the rustic Tasting Shed dining room display the menu, with lots of rustic fare.

We ordered a bit of everything for our group of 10 to share, such as Beef cheek and the Pork belly with the tasty puree and celery slaw were our favourites. The veges were also good, thai curry pumpkin and the plate of green beans shows no restraint with chunks of nuts and a peanut satay dressing.

Sweet ricotta doughnuts served with quince caramel and poached pear segments and a goat's milk curd had some swooning. The lemon meringue cone was quaint. I found the Chocolate Valrhona disappointing in presentation and substance and I’ve tasted way better salted caramel ice cream bought from Nosh.

I would say the only fault I really had was the lack of service, the plates not being cleared in a timely manner, empty glasses several times through the evening and no offer of replenishment. We had to ask to order dessert. I wasn’t told there was a Wedding when I made my group booking and I think that was more important than us. Paying also was difficult but also not mention of rules for a group under 12 when I booked.

Imagine a restaurant in the country next to a great vineyard. I was told to try Chefs night (Thursday) at The Tasting Shed, in Kumeu, where I'd heard owners Jo and Ganesh Raj had created something special. Our group of 9 arrived in the dark and I felt as though we'd walked into an exclusive designer hangout. It was gorgeous. The main building is impressive. A high-studded concrete and wood "shed", with an adjoining terrace, that provides the all-important link between the cosy interior and the expanse of the rural countryside outside, is cleverly designed and bursts with rustic charm without being tacky. We had a long table with cushioned bench out in the canopy area with lots of heating being that it was a chilly winters night, not that you would know it in here. We were started off with lovely fresh warm wholemeal bread rolls with Olive oil & balsamic. You had to slow down and remind yourself that you hadn’t even started the actual meal yet, they were that good. Then out came a Pan-fried snapper which was subtly Asian, Thai curry pumpkin which was tasty, Pork belly which was juicy and duck fat potatoes which everyone loves. They were shared dishes, but plenty to go round and then some. For dessert we had Espresso mousse with Ginger Churros. I’m not a coffee fan so I am happy it just traced the glass and did not over power. I liked that the two big long Churros were done in ginger, something a little different than the usual cinnamon sugar. The staff were friendly and we were lucky to have 3 waitresses bring out our food so that we all got to eat at the exact same time. I’d definitely return perhaps in the Summer when I can enjoy seeing the beautiful grounds whilst sipping a cold Pinot Gris and sampling the Summer fare.

The Tasting Shed in Kumeu is a fantastic place that not only offers a great option for a day out of the city, but also fantastic food. Only 30 mins out of the city, it's an easy drive. The venue is comfortable and really relaxing. The food and drink just adds to the atmosphere. Service was very friendly and comfortable. It can be slow though. I guess all part of the relaxed atmosphere, maybe? I don't mind it as much but what annoyed me a little was the lack of attentiveness by staff. It was a little difficult to get their attention. Food was fantastic. You cannot go past the pig's head. The fat just tastes so good and melts as if it's just sauce. Even those usually averse to eating it took to it like a duck to water. Other worthy to mention dishes are the pork belly and venison. Cheezels will never be the same again if you order the churros. However, my impression was that maybe seafood is not their forte. The two seafood dishes we ordered were sub-par. The flavour balance in the fish of the day was off and the clams were, unappealing. The scallops that accompanied the pork belly though were superb. We wanted a plate of just that.Overall, the misses weren't so unforgiving to detract it from its strengths. The Tasting Shed has definitely not been hyped up.

Went to the Whiskey Rock n Roll night - what an experience! You couldn't get nicer hosts - Ganesh & Jo, who even include transport when you book! It's worth the trip out to Kumeu - gorgeous setting, great company & of course some of the tastiest food I've tried! We are going back to The Tasting Shed again to try the chicken wings.

kudos to ganesh and the team at the Tasting Shed - your metro award is thoroughly deserved in my opinion. there's a lot to be said for great, uncomplicated food in a relaxed setting and I think you guys have really nailed it. Looking forward to the Tasting Shed appear even more prominently in industry awards for years to come.

Hey Tasting Shed - everyone is saying - You have great food but way too expensive for the size portions. Someone I know spend $62 and still went away hungry. You want a Pinot Gris - $13 for the cheapest glass - this is above Viaduct prices. Great service and surroundings but if you don't do something about the menu - you won't last which is a real shame

The Tasting Shed is well worth the drive out to Kumeu for. Great selection of beer and a very rustic, interesting menu. The pork belly was terrific - only to be topped off by the churros...if only there was a tasting shed closer to home!
