The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Formerly known as the Forester’s Arms, a rough and ready bikers pub, this gracious old riverside building has been reborn as The Riverhead. Check out live sport in the Portage sports bar or lunch and dinner on the huge deck overlooking the river.
Service
Friendly and prompt, with lots of information on offer about the pub’s fascinating history. Established in 1857, it’s the second oldest pub in all of New Zealand apparently.
What’s on Tap?
The Riverhead is a DB-aligned pub so look forward to Monteiths, Tui and Tiger on tap. Befitting its status as a gastro pub, there’s also a terrific winelist.
Feeling peckish?
Definitely a cut above most pub food with excellent gourmet pizzas, burgers and innovative entrée-sized plates including cinnamon-braised pork belly and chorizo stuffed baby calamari. Just maybe Auckland’s best hand cut chips and aioli as well.
The Bottom Line
Opening just in time for the later weeks of summer, The Riverhead makes for a great destination for a lazy riverside brunch or lunch.
A Reason to Return
The opportunity to arrive by jetboat to The Riverhead’s riverine back door. See www.theriverhead.co.nz for details and tide times.
