The ViewAuckland Review
Make sure you use the correct door to gain access to the Pony Club.
If you miscalculate your entry and use the door to the right, you’ll be deposited into a massage parlour. If you overshoot and use the door on the left, you’ll be smack in one of Auckland’s oldest strip joints. Either way you’ll be overdressed.
The Pony Club used to be a male striptease where women on stag nights and drunken office parties would often end up. Accordingly, this underground club still has a certain seedy undertone.
The basement-like room is dimly lit; there are several plush booths lining the mirror-covered walls; unisex toilets; lots of hand railings (no pole was seen tonight); and a Miami Vice thing going on.
Yet it’s cosy; the sort of place that can accommodate quiet conversation or a wild party (and neither would clash).
The menu is lengthy (in both the beer/wine and cocktail variety) and the bar tender is oozing with friendliness.
We sit at one of the booths and check out the crowd. The majority are trendy, fashionable, a little try-hard and definitely making usage of the mirrors (on our visit, the man making kissy faces at the bathroom mirrors takes the “I’m so into myself” award).
There are a couple of minor celebrities in the mix; a lot of hair product; and a few blondes dancing like they belong at the place next door.
The music during our stay was a mix of 80s hits with a little bit of house at a decibel level allowing for conversation or to dance a little.
With the Pony Club, one is never completely sure whether the seedy, 80s raunchy aspect is done as a bit of a joke—or if it is actually taking itself seriously. Either way our stay here was comfortable, the staff friendly, and we will definitely be checking it out again.
Make sure to take your spandex, best perm and choose the correct entrance.
