The Oakroom, Auckland - Restaurant Review
Vibe
Exposed bricks, high ceilings and leather furniture create a sophisticated vibe with
echoes of a New York loft. Outside there’s a spacious deck – complete with winter-
warming gas heaters – looking down on Vic Park Markets work in progress - more
restaurants are opening in October apparently.
Service
Warm and personable from owner Cory Stevens, with a few good recommendations
for what to drink to partner with our pizzas.
What’s on Tap?
A couple of James Squire Aussie imports – including the excellent Nine Tales Amber
Ale – and Beck’s, Guinness, Mac’s Gold and Speight’s Cider. Cocktails are a mix
of classics like Manhattans and Negronis, and Oak Room-inspired signature tipples.
The excellent wine list features an interesting array of less common varietals like
Verdelho, Arneis, Montepulciano and Zinfandel.
Feeling peckish?
Decent pizzas – definitely try the spicy Ruby Murray ($22) with a topping a
traditional South Indian chicken curry, red onions and coriander – and small plates
including grilled chicken brochettes with cabbage and miso mayo ($14) and garlic
toasts with smoked fish remoulade and lemon ($14).
The Bottom Line
The Oakroom is a classy and super-welcoming addition to the ongoing re-
emergence of Victoria Park Market as an eating and drinking destination. Come along
with a group for after-work drinks and nibbles on a Friday night.
A Reason to Return
For a glass of Burnt Spur Sauvignon Blanc and the salt and pepper scallops with
garlic, black beans, lime and coriander ($24)
