The Lumsden Freehouse, Newmarket - Bar Review

Vibe

Following the transition of the Cock & Bull in Newmarket to an Irish bar, The Lumsden’s now relaunched as a specialist craft beer bar. The clubby and cosy decor remains largely unchanged, and the covered outdoor area facing Lumsden Green is a real asset in busy Newmarket. We’re looking forward to popping back for live blues and soul on Saturday afternoons.

Service
Easygoing and friendly, with a good knowledge of The Lumsden’s revised beer offering.

What's On Tap
A rotating selection of taps serves up well-priced craft beers from mainly Auckland region brewers like Epic, Hallertau, Deep Creek and the Sawmill Brewing Company in Leigh. Becks and Guinness are available for less crafty beer drinkers, and more than a 100 bottled microbrews – all from NZ – create havoc for indecisive types. Tasting paddle of five beers for $22 are a good way to try a few different brews.

Feeling Peckish?
Classic pub food like thick cut chips, buffalo wings and mussels and fries, and bigger offerings including pizzas, burgers and steak sandwiches.

The Bottom Line
Craft beer continues to make inroads in the Auckland scene, and The Lumsden should be congratulated for the bold step of cutting ties with the big breweries. It’s thoroughly unpretentious, so should do a good job of introducing craft beer to a more mainstream audience. Look forward to pretty good prices on food and drinks too.
