The Flying Moa, Mt Wellington - Bar Review

Mt Wellington isn't awash with good pub options, but on this decidedly average winters day, it seemed the combination of charming service and decent pub-grub fare proved enough of a temptation for the areas mainly (assumed) corporate crowd on this particular Thursday afternoon.

The charm offensive was on display from the outset - Bar Manager Lance was good for a yarn and that level of hospitality wasn't lacking in any of the Flying Moa's staff that we had dealings with. The pub would have been half full of late-lunch diners but our meals (and replenished drinks) were served at a pretty decent rate.

What's On Tap
The Flying Moa is DB aligned so the usual suspects (Monteith's, Heineken, Tui) were all on tap but it was great to see a lot of Monteith's lesser travelled varieties on offer - the Porter Noir a very good brew (and perfect for the climate). The wine list is pretty good as well and when it heats up, you can imagine a lot of punters reaching for the cider - Monteith's, Rekorderlig and Old Mout all featuring.

Feeling Peckish?
On recommendation from an astute regular, the Moa pulled pork sandwich with accompanying Potato skins was my choice for this visit. Heavy-handed on the pork (extra points) and at under $15, a very satisfying meal. As I write this, looking back over the winter menu, there's a whole gambit of choices that could easily warrant a return visit with the Venison and mushroom shepherd's pie most likely the first cab off the rank.

The Bottom Line
A good, honest New Zealand pub experience that would be welcome in any Auckland suburb. Mt Wellington...who would have thought!
