The Elephant Wrestler, Takapuna - Bar Review
Total pub grub, but on the high end. It was a cold night outside and we were catching up with friends for a drink, so burgers seemed the perfect option. We went for the True Blue Burger (a mighty pattie covered in blue cheese, caramelised onions and horseradish aioli) which came with a good helping of fries. The other burger on order was the Chorizo Burger (beef and chorizo sausage with jalapeno aioli and guacamole). We were kind of hoping that the chorizo would be in the pattie, but it comes separate. Maybe mix the patties up a bit, guys? That said, the food was great and hit the spot. Burgers are around $19, and the Elephant Wrestler does steaks, pizzas and tapas as well.
Completely standard drinks menu with the usuals on tap, and the very usual on the winelist. It ain’t sophisticated though to be fair, it’s perfectly on target.
Comfortable. There’s a great covered courtyard area which on the night we went was a bit chilly (some more heating in there maybe?) but inside at the big wooden benches by the bar was just as good. The furnishings aren’t as interesting as Macs Brew Bar next door, but it’s not as chaotic.
Friendly and helpful, and our drinks were always full. A good sign.
There are some great nightly specials including 2 for 1 meals on Mondays and Bloody Mary Sundays (which is a welcome addition to the Sunday brunch options!)
The Bottom Line
A step up from its neighbour, The Elephant Wrestler is a great spot for a casual meal with friends. If you’re in Takapuna for this reason, it’s recommended.
