This return to this place was not so exciting as the first time. It seems that the Chef had a major infinity to salt and over seasoned. We shared a few platters of chicken and lamb with coleslaw and curly fries and it was all over salted. Its such a shame because they would have been great dishes.

The Jelly tips dessert still wows me and looked and tasted the same as my first encounter. I recommend it.

The wine selection is great and I like the new decor. Give it a go.

This isn't the old sports bar on College Hill that it used to be. The Cav, as the new owners have ingeniously called it, is looking great. Pale timber tabletops and white seats look slick, while hanging baskets of greenery soften the space.

My group of 12 devoured a selection of things on the menu such as the seafood chowder, sliders, Lettuce cups with spice chicken and Fish Taco with lime slaw and hand cut fries. The Southern fried chicken with blue cheese slaw and onion rings was good. Whilst there was a lot of fried food it wasn’t dripping in oil and was well treated. The Ribs I thought looked nice but my friends said they were not cooked long enough and were chewy rather than the meat falling off the bone.

For dessert the whole table ordered the ‘Jelly Tip’ – Vanilla Pannecotta, Chocolate Mousse, Raspberry Jelly and freeze dried raspberries. I so want to replicate it at home. It was oh so good that I wanted to lick the plate! There was Crème Brulee and Churro’s on the menu also but I am glad I got the Jelly Tip.

The place is noisey as a pub is, and hard for a group to have conversations audibly but the drinks menu was great and the staff efficient and friendly.

Plenty have tried to do "flash pub grub" but The Cav may be the first to succeed in doing it well enough to qualify for that "gastropub" label. The Cav is still a bar where you can watch some sport but it’s a cool place to go on a Friday night after work.

The Cavalier Tavern is an institution (in a good way!) and is a regular spot for super Sundays amongst my mates. The decks great, particularly on a good summer's day and 'the Cav' attracts its fair share of eye candy (or maybe it's the beer-googles?).
