The Best Gastro Pubs
The lines between pubs and restaurants are increasingly blurred. The reason: the acceleration of the foodie bar - or the gastro pub as it's widely known. There are so many bars purporting to be gastro pubs these days, it's reached saturation point. But, for their commitment to food and drink excellence, these venues represent the best gastro pubs in Auckland.
The Cav
68 College Hill Road, Auckland, 1011
Newly refurbished, we were simply left with no option but to put The Cav at the top of the Auckland Gastro Pub tree after a recent visit. From soups to sandwiches to steaks, deciding what to choose from the impressive menu will be the your second hardest decision of your day (the first being whether or not you could manage another course). The great range of bar snacks are yet another reason to head venture along to College Hill.

The Riverhead
Corner Queen & York, Auckland
An excuse for a leisurely afternoon drive if ever there was one, since being re-launched a few years back, The Riverhead has become a well-traveled destination for many city-dwellers seeking fantastic food and drink with a setting to match. According to our reviewer, it's also, just maybe, home to Auckland's best hand cut chips and aioli! Whatever your mode of transport (car, bike or jetboat), make sure you mark The Riverhead down.

127 Picton Street, Auckland
East Auckland's best gastro pub by some mile, Basalt's inclusion in this list shouldn't come as any surprise to the local populace. Although the kiwi staple, the beer battered fish and chips, takes some beating, it's the crispy skinned pork belly served with apple and walnut salad that sealed this bars fate.

Hallertau Brewbar and Restaurant
1171 Coatesville Riverhead Highway, Auckland
Another 'destination' of note, since it's stylish overhaul this West Auckland brewbar has been lighting up the review sites and forums with it's bistro fare and relaxed ambience. Hallertau's brews have always stood up for themselves, but with handcrafted meal options like smoked pork belly and apple fritters and butternut gnocchi featuring on an concise yet well thought out menu, the food isn't far behind.

Cove Bites and Brews by Deep Creek Brewery
149c Ocean Road, Oneroa, Auckland
A Waiheke newcomer that has promptly set about making a big impact on our favourite island destination. We shouldn't have been surprised really though should we - this gastro pub comes to us from the Deep Creek Brewing team (ribs, those ribs *mind wanders) who have mastered the art of matching craft beer with casual bistro dining. Add spectacular views of Oneroa Beach to the mix and magic happens.
