The ViewAuckland Review
Tucked away in Titirangi village, Takahe Restaurant & Bar is a wee treasure I’m pleased to have discovered.
Takahe makes you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. The friendly staff—wearing a relaxed non-uniform of jeans—treat you like a regular, giving attention that is intimate without being overbearing.
And they all smile, which is something that seems to happen less the closer you get to Central Auckland.
On the night we went the place was humming both inside and out so I was happy to enjoy my delicious glass of Kerr Farm Kumeu chardonnay ($8.50) and my partner his Montieths Summer Ale ($6), outside under the stars, warmed by toasty outdoor heaters.
The interior is sophisticated with warm rich colours on the walls and furnishings and the big bi-fold doors and windows create an awesome open feeling.
According to one waiter, on a clear day you can sit at the bar along the back wall and gaze across to Birkenhead.
The crowd was mostly 50-something couples, with a sprinkling of youngsters and no pretentiousness.
It is probably more of a restaurant than a bar and the busy hum of conversation was a more relaxing background than the overpowering music some places play.
With its spot-on mix of the right look, feel, price and service, Takahe Restaurant & Bar gives any Central Auckland bar a run for its money.
