Got a voucher from Grabone and went there to celebrate our 22nd year wedding anniversary. Parking was at the back of the building so when we first came in from the back entrance you will see some slot machines and some outdoor seats. Not a very good first impression. However when we went inside the main dinning area, we were surprised on how cozy it was. Not too large but cozy enough for conversation. I ordered the salmon and it was delightful but I find it was a really small portion compared to how much vegie and coconut cream that was in such a big size plate. My husband ordered the duck and it was also delicious but it was as small as my salmon. There were about four or five tiny slices again setting on top of a mountain of vegies. I am not sure if this is their normal portions or maybe because the voucher was 50% off their normal price. Despite this I would love to go back to Starry Thai and this time try the pan fried snapper and the sizzling plates that I eyed most of the other tables ordered. Also, I was impressed by their staff. They were friendly and very attentive. Our courses came out at the right time and we finished our meal with a very nice japanese green tea.
Must admit that Starry Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants in Auckland. Saw it on Grabone, googled it, found that it had a good mix of comments, and decided to give it a go. When we got there I realize I have driven passed it nearly everyday when I go to work and I never noticed it was there. The exterior of the restaurant looked creepy, we hesitated a bit before we went in (we paid for the voucher after all), and found that the interior is the exact opposite. I won't say it is luxury but it was definitely nicely designed (not in a Thai way though). With the food, I am not sure if the dishes they offer are 100% traditional, as I can see 2 Malaysian dishes in there, but the food we ordered sure was very delicious. I ordered the beef eye fillet and my friend ordered the whole snapper, both of them were brilliant (too bad they don't have the lemon fish). The service was also excellent. My friend had a lot of restrictions on what she can eat and the staff were very helpful with the order. The portion wasn't exactly big but sufficient. Starry Thai has now become my favorite Thai restaurant in Auckland.
Unfortunately we aren't ever going to try the food here. We bought a Grab One voucher and missed the expiry date by 1 day. We rang to try and book and they were unrelenting with their expiry date rule.
One day is not a week. We can understand 2 or 3 days, a week etc -= in fact we wouldn't have bothered on that basis. But one day is a bit harsh. I have spoken to a couple of people about it and all agree with us that an expiry day of Thursday June 28th Versus our contact today Friday 29th June is a very rough decision.
Suffice to say we aren't impressed.
Got some take out from Starry Thai a while back. The food was alright, nothing to shout about. They have some fairly cheap lunch deals on the weekdays, so alright if you're in the area and looking for a cheap feed. Dinners are pricier.
