A real chilled out bar. Good food and ok drinks (a bit pricey). A suitable place to hang out before a show at The Civic.
Unfortuantely Starks have stopped serving most food. We went for a glass a wine and nibbles before a show mid-January and they only had cake on offer when we wanted something savoury to have with wine. Very disappointing.
Bought a takeaway coffee immediately prior to the screening of La Danse last Sunday at the Film Festival. There were lots of people in the queue so obviously the barista was under pressure.
My wife said the coffee is likely to be bad given the pressure. Sure enough after I had a sip, I realised it was burnt and really bad.
And $5 for a small cup of takeaway latte is simply a rip-off.
They shouldn't have kept taking orders just before the movie started, knowing that they can't deliver. Bad customer service, and not good for their brand.
Im from Ireland but lived in Auckland for many years. Starks was one of my locals and I loved it. The service is second to none. Manys a time I went to the civic for shows and was more than happy to pop into starks for the pre show drink.keep it up guys.ur legends..
Before a show at the Civic, my wife and I usually end up having a wee 'tightner' or two at Stark's. On show nights Stark's can get uncomfortably busy but if you are there early enough it's well worth the effort.
In the venue info it says that Starks is a champagne bar by night. However, they serve champagne in the mornings too. There's something special about sitting outside on the footpath at 11am drinking a London French 75 champagne cocktail. Located next to the mid-city bus stops, Starks is perfect for those times when you just miss your bus and have half an hour till the next one arrives. Be warned: you'll probably be enjoying this bar so much you'll miss the next bus as well.
Starks, on the corner of Queen Street and Wellesley, and taking up the foyer of the Civic Theatre, is worth dropping into for a quick bite. Normal small cafe fare is offered; hot sarnies, bagels etc. Service was quick and delivered with a smile - more than you normally get in some other Auckland Central spots.
Starks is a nice, central spot to have a quick bite and some good coffee. The plush, leather chairs in the foyer of the Civic are also a treat and can easily keep you at Starks for a lot longer than you should be!
I had a nice coffee and an even nicer BLT - Starks is one of the few cafes up this end of Queen Street that I'd consider going back to.
