Friday night after work and I’m amongst the well-heeled in Northcote Point’s Sausalito Cafe.
A great little café during the day (don’t go past their corn fritters if brunching), Sausalito is also a hive of activity at night it seems.
There’s nothing flashy, edgy or compelling about Sausalito’s décor—it’s clean, simple and frankly, a little boring. Nevertheless, there’s quite a crowd this night, so Sausalito is obviously doing something right.
There’s not a lot of options in this area for a drink: further down Queen Street there’s the historic Northcote Tavern, but aside from that, the choices are fairly limited—quite a contrast from Sausalito’s wine list which has some unusual offerings including a good many by the glass.
The foot-traffic between the Bridgeway Cinema (next door), the Metro award-winning Engine Room (across the road), and Sausalito is constant. Perhaps this is the reason why Sausalito is popular with a combination of movie-goers, after work drinkers, and later on, diners.
Sausalito isn’t where you’d go for some action, but if you appreciate decent wine by the glass, a slow pace and quiet conversation, you’ll find that in abundance.
