The ViewAuckland Review
Vibe
Retro Kiwiana combines with the old school elegance of a gentlemen’s club. Eclectic conversation starters include stuffed gamebirds, replica Goldie paintings, a giant tiki, and a private room decorated with Playboy magazines from the 1970s - just the covers, OK. If you’re in a group, ask about booking out the 12-person birdcage on the Red Hummingbird’s leafy rear deck.
Service
Owner Luke Dallow’s background with Chapel and Sale St means he’s equipped Red Hummingbird with a sassy and well-trained team.
What’s On Tap?
Monteith’s Pilsner and Crushed Apple cider, Tiger and Heineken, with the usual DB suspects of Amstel, Sol and Budvar by the bottle. At least the cocktail list is more inspired – try the Murray’s Dream with Stolen rum, fresh chilli, ginger, passionfruit, lemon and orange juice.
Feeling Peckish?
Look forward to eclectic spins on classic Kiwi tucker - everything from Cumberland sausages rolls and jam donuts, to smoked eel on toasted sweetbread and crisps with classic Kiwi onion dip.
The Bottom Line
Yet another savvy eating and drinking venue from Luke Dallow, with a quirky, but unpretentious atmosphere. Expect Red Hummingbird to quickly become central Auckland’s busiest bar.
A Reason To Return
To try the Peruvian-style roast chicken served with rye bread and chargrilled piquillo peppers.
