Pinot Plus, Takapuna - Restaurant Review

A warm, cosy local restaurant with a wine list that will knock your socks off.

Friendly and professional service with owner and sommelier John bringing both his fantastic enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of wine to deliver each of us a fantastic wine experience that both surprised and delighted our dining group.

I loved the wine tasting at the table (an unexpected bonus) and were equally impressed by the superb Gibson Bridge Pinot Gris ($60 a bottle), and John Forrest Syrah ($20 per glass). As for the food, the slow cooked beef cheeks with parsnip puree and tender green beans ($26.50) were delightfully tasty and melted in the mouth. One of my dining companions was also quick to point out that the fish of the day (snapper) was a taste worth savouring.

Most Surprising Dish
The smoked duck liver pate with nuts, beetroot salad and garlic crostini proved a delightful combination. Similarly, the strawberry crème brulee ($13) had the perfect mix of silkiness and fruit with a top that delivered on the crack.

Drinks List
The thoughtful wine list showcased many local vineyards as well as a couple of Australian varieties. Perhaps reflective of John’s passion for wine, beer drinkers had a limited choice of Galbraiths or West Coast Brews – a few more craft beer options would be a welcome addition.

The Bottom Line
A range of tasty small plates and shared dishes that can be served as a main for an additional $10. The food was honest and tasty with portions that were just the right size to ensure room for dessert. Pinot Plus prides itself on its wine list and we certainly agree that this offering is reason enough to give the Takapuna restaurant a try.

Reason to Return
Honest, wholesome and nourishing home cooked food with unfaultable service and a wine tasting experience that is second to none. The desserts in particular were all fantastic but the homemade apple tart and vanilla bean icecream was the real winner.
