The Patriot is one of those classic British pubs that has been made over with a kiwi twist. There's lots of great seating options including a private room with a HUGE centre table, a garden bar and pavement seating (although not so keen on that as right next to a busy road!).
It was pretty busy for some Thursday after-work drinks but you could still move around and the service was fine. The barman coped with a big order of a variety of drinks with each drink served the correct way.
We didn't stay for food but the meals that passed us looked big - typical gastro-pub styled huge juicy burgers etc. and the menu pricing looked about right. The bar meal of wedges was a good option - large portion, chunky wedges although there was probably a bit too much sour cream dolloped on top (would have preferred this to the side).
All in all, it'd be a great place for some drinks with mates and if in Devonport again, I'll be back to try out the full dinner menu.
Friend and I went to The Patriot for a catch up my friend decided he would buy me dinner,to our suprise the dinner menu was ridiculously over price for a bar menu ,the pricing i would expect at a top restaurant anyhow we settled with wedges ,took long enough when they arrived i was shocked they look like they had been microwave hot we both dug in,i nearly puked the wedges were hard tasteless like cardboard .I felt like going back and telling the waiter but my friend told me not to bother,he felt the same about the wedges too.Since he brought them i ate them quickly drinking my beer, did't wanna waste his money. I won't be going back again for a feed, for a drink or 2 yeah but for a bite no,i will go elsewhere.
My boyfriend is English and absolutely loves this place. Can't understand the appeal myself, but the Patriot has had its moments. Good staff and the burgers are awesome (and big enough to share). The Patriot's probably the best thing on offer in Devonport so worth a look if you're over that way.
we visited the patriot on a couple of occasions while on holiday from ireland and we found the staff very helpful and friendly, the food was great and good value for money, as was the beer, all in all a lovely pub.
Went to the patriot for a stag do one night, everyone involved was well underway and the bar staff handled us very well. It was a cool pub and a top spot to stop for a pint or three.
Guinness needs to be cleaned more often, or whatever it is they do to make it taste really good. A certain gruff hebridean charm by the head waiters contrasts nicely with the low-level surliness of the kiwi-girl barmaids. It is in sum a serviceable pub, with a due focus on beer for its own sake and plenty of covered outdoor areas for smokers (the only true beer drinkers).
NB: The quiz master has a tendency to use the CIA website for geography questions; so be ready for some geopolitically suspect classifications.
I'm a Devonport local and the Patriot is probably one of the better bars in the area. The crispy chicken salad is always good as well!
