Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves!

Definitely in keeping with its title, UK expats need not search far for a few creature comforts.

The flags of the four home unions flanked the walls and with giveaway accents overheard, there can be no confusion as to the patronage The Patriot is aiming to attract.

Our trip out to this Devonport location on a Tuesday night was all in aid of an SOS from a friend’s quiz team. Obviously scraping the barrel, we were welcome all the same.

It looked like this quiz night is a permanent fixture on many locals’ calendars. There were a few locals propping up the bar, but the majority were seated and tucking into some grub, eagerly anticipating the quiz.

We followed suit, with both my partner and I opting for the Thai Green Curry pie ($15.50). Boring I know, but in our defence, the menu was fairly limited.

I haven’t come across many places that offer Boddingtons on tap so took up the opportunity—at $7.50, reasonably priced.

By 7.30ish, the quiz master started his well rehearsed routine, keeping the crowd attentive for the next two hours. Amid accusations of cheating, protestations and general light-hearted fun, a winner of a $100 bar tab was found.

Although the Patriot does merit a visit on any night, take my advice and take along a few friends (or at least intelligent ring-ins) on a Tuesday.
