Orphans Kitchen, Ponsonby - Restaurant Review

Look forward to rustic chic with wooden tables and sheepskin cushions combining with simply painted walls and vintage preserving jars used as lights. Big shared tables create an informal and buzzy ambience, and music is kept at a conversation-friendly level with everything from Dire Straits to Joy Division.

Warm and professional with a good knowledge of the concise menu and excellent wine, beer and cocktail list.

Drinks List

Two beers on tap – a lager and pale ale – specially brewed for Orphans Kitchen by Brothers Beer, a concise wine list with top drops from New Zealand, Spain, Italy, France and Germany, and two classic cocktails in pisco sours and negronis.

The delicate entree-sized smaller plates ($15) of yellowtail tuna with grapefruit, wild sorrell and fennel, and a terrific tortilla stuffed with South Island lamb combined with feijoa, millet and sheep's milk yoghurt ($15). Larger plates to shine include fish with jerusalem artichoke and Meyer lemon, and beef with swede, black garlic and barley. Prices are kept lower with clever use of secondary cuts like hapuka wing and beef rump.

The Bottom Line

Less is definitely more at the excellent Orphans Kitchen with a tight menu delivering innovative flavour combinations amid a hip but unpretentious space. The restaurant may channel a laidback vibe, but this is seriously smart food with a strong focus on the changing seasons and availability of produce.

Reason To Return

For Orphans Kitchen signature boil up with wild boar, kumara, doughboys, watercess and flax seeds ($25) , and another stab at decadent desserts including dark Valrhona chocolate with tamarillo, black cardamom and chia ($14).
