With $150 vouchers as a thank you gift, we headed along to Mikano for an intimate "date night". I liked the location - something different, with views over the harbour, helicopter launch pad and the bustling port (which is strangely interesting!).
We had a bit of trouble parking but after popping into the restaurant they were very helpful and suggested a place we could park without getting towed or a fine! Nice start! The service was pretty good throughout - if I had to be picky (and this is only because at an expensive restaurant which Mikano is, you do expect great food and great service), then there was a bit of delay in asking for our order ("I'll just get the specials" and then five minutes later still no return from our waitress!) and our mains were brought out but our side order was brought out a few minutes later (I'd expect them all at the same time). However, these small hiccups were made up by the fantastic service of the maitre d' who was attentive, the right amount of chatty and made us feel special.
The food certainly lived up to expectations... I would highly recommend the crab lasagna for starters (so very moreish!) and the duck was cooked to perfection. The steak was of high quality and the sides were different, but tasty. And the chocolate tart to finish with was just divine, served perfectly with a mint ice cream.
All in all, a lovely night out at a great location with good service... but be prepared to pay for it (our $150 vouchers didn't cover the bill!).
We went to Mikano Restaurant for dinner on the evening of our engagement but it turned out to be a bad idea!!!These guys have poor service!!
Pluses:– Food was pretty good, but two dishes were not quite right
Minuses:– Bad service!– Rude manager (Delvene) when we tried to rectify the poor service with them the next day– We were told by manager “this is just a brasserie so don’t have high expectations” “don’t expect our restaurant to give you a special touch for your engagement”
Interesting:- Four different wait staff served at our table- No wine list left on the table or offer of extra drinks- They said they were extremely busy that day yet we had four empty tables next to ours
Verdict: – We were going to have our reception here but no way, not now!! Don’t Go!! Don’t Even Try It!!
excellent food and wine, throughly enjoyed Mikano
Fantastic food, service, lovely location and outlook - looking forward to returning!
Food was not up to standard and restaurant did not respond to rectify our complaint.
I chose Mikano Restaurant & Bar for the harbour views and helipad novelty value - and that certainly lived up to my expectations and added an extra dimension to our evening. Service was seemingly efficient initially, but that sadly was where it ended. Our waiter was very young and didn't seem to know much about the menu or wine list.
Our shared starter took an eternity to arrive, and hence, was a little on the cold side, lacking the chorizo (and no provision was made for easy sharing), but the squid was lovely.
We both opted for fish dishes in different styles for mains, with a couple of sides. Both were very tasty and I was pleasantly surprised by reasonably sized portions.
So in summary: slightly pricey, but tasty well balanced dishes; downstairs seating would have been preferable; but overall, a very pleasant evening.
I went with our company to Mikano Restaurant & Bar for a belated Christmas dinner (in February) and had an ok time. The entree was delicious. I had Waikanae crab lasagne, which so yummy I could have had a couple more. The main was nothing to rave about, but fair - chilly roasted salmon.
The service was very quick for such a big group and the wine list was great. A bit pricey for the food, but otherwise a nice place to eat.
