Mexico, I can’t say that this is the BEST Mexican restaurant in Auckland, but it’s a franchise that I visit frequently because the food has been consistently good. A free table at the Britomart branch can be hard to come by, so I prefer to dine at the Ellerslie store, where the dining area is substantially bigger with more free parking on the residential streets. When it comes to ordering food at Mexico, I’m rather predictable and tend to order the usual items.I enjoy dining at Mexico with my friends because the lively atmosphere keeps us perky and we always have a great time (but this could be due to the jugs of scrumptious margaritas and sangria). I find the service at the Ellerslie branch to be better and because they have a bigger dining space, we never feel rushed to vacate our table. For more details on the food, please check out my post

One of the worst customer service experiences in Ellerslie Mexico tonight. And since I've just got back from New York, that's saying something. We went to Mexico Ellerslie for my dad's birthday. Ordered the prawn quesadilla and there were no prawns in it. We just assumed they had taken the wrong order but when the bill came they charged us for the prawn quesadilla. We told the lady at the front of house and she dismissed us. Wouldn't take off the 2 dollars off the bill and was very rude, saying we were dumb and probably missed the prawns and we were dumb to assume that they had taken the wrong order and not said something. So first they stuff up and then they insult us. Good one Mexico. We used to spend hundreds of dollars here, but between this awful service and the bad tummy we got from the cerviche in Britomart the last time, won't be coming back.
Hola! I was very excited to hear that another “Mexico” was opening up in Ellerslie and I wasn’t disappointed! The atmosphere was buzzing for a Friday night so much that you couldn’t help but laugh when your almost sitting on top of your neighbor. I couldn’t resist their Salsa roja with house made corn chips as a starter and complimented this with a carafe of vanilla and watermelon margarita – amazing! For the main I decided to have the Chicken mole Amarillo, charred sweet corn w blackened onion crema quesadilla which had the perfect tang of spiciness. All and all it was a great night and if you are after a restaurant which is full of life and light hearted then this is this is the place for you!
Finally a Mexico closer to my house! I was hoping that because it wasn't in the city centre it wouldn't be as busy at the Britomart location but I was wrong. Even on a Wednesday night at 6.30pm the place was packed and we had a half an hour wait (not too bad) so we had a drink at the bar. Like the Britomart location, the restaurant has fantastic decor and a great vibe. It is more open, lighter and larger than Britomart and has separate tables with more elbow room.
The menu is the same as other Mexico locations and the food just as good. We ordered the Pumpkin in yeast batter, sorrel chimichurri, yellow salsa frita and Quince charred pork belly, habanero pico, green onion, coconut soft tacos, the fried chicken and Papas, wild mushroom, garlic chips, queso seco, salsa borracha quesadilla. The tacos were wonderful. Both tacos had excellent flavours, I would definitely order them again. The fried chicken was amazing, as always, however the quesadilla was disappointing. It was very bland and needed more spice and seasoning, it tasted like dry toast.
Mexico has a great selection of drinks including margaritas and sangria. We ordered a carafe of Black Plum Margarita which was enough for two people, maybe three at a stretch.
For dessert we ordered Salted caramel & chocolate ganache w anise scented churros. The churros were perfect, hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, delicious!
The service was fantastic, friendly and very fast. Mexico Ellerslie is a great addition to the Mexico franchise.
I love Mexico but have found the Britomart & Takapuna restaurants a little too dark and claustrophobic, not at Ellerslie. The new addition to the chain and its large bright and open. Even better it is near my house. I think this will be my new haunt, on this occasion I went for lunch on the weekend and it wasn’t busy.
I had a new special they had which was pork mince with a lime zing on their own homemade potato crisps – an amazing popping flavour sensation in your mouth.
And then I had my favourite, a couple of the chicken Taco’s.
Also new on this restaurants menu was the Virgin Margaritta which I LOVED, finished off nicely with a sugar and cinnamon rim.
The service was great from two lovely personable waitresses. Big thumbs up from me.
