Housed in a cool old building that for years was the home of a Thai restaurant that never seemed overly popular. Owners David Schofield and Andrew Cameron who own the Melbourne restaurant of the same name decided to bring it to Auckland. The space is great with some cool furniture, walls of wine everywhere so it looks like a massive wine library and some cool art on the walls. An interesting ceiling sculpture made of wine glasses draws your eyes upward. It really does feel like you are in an expensive opulent establishment. For entrée I got two entrée’s on my one plate. A 63-degree egg crumbed into a scotch eggs nestled on a cauliflower and pickle bed. But then also a Chicken parfait in a glass with toasted bread. A strange combination of the two flavours but a perfectly cooked egg. For mains the pork belly with roasted kumara, miso and maple dressing, pickled apple, roasted peanut, and coriander was amazing. For sweet-tooths, the Pear with burnt caramel and croissant or crème brulee with chocolate tweal looked great. The only thing I could fault was the speed at which the table was cleared, the waiter although lovely was too eager and whilst I was still eating my entrée with fork loaded and making its way to my mouth, my plate was whipped away from under me. On mention that I hadn’t finished and lots of parfait left, he never offered me more bread let alone leaving my plate till I was finished.Meat Fish Wine is worth going to just to check out the bathrooms, a uni-sex set up with a massive round copper cow trough that at first is rather mythical at how the water will come out to wash your hands. I think this place will give the newly vamped O’Connell Street Bistro, just a few steps away, a run for its money.
