“...here on Gilligan’s Island.”
Isn’t it amazing how first impressions in the bar scene—as with anything else in life—last.
Wandering through the bars extensive garden to the open plan bar, I couldn’t help but compare this Waiheke Island watering hole with the American TV sitcom.
Despite the ‘authentic Irish’ claims, Malones Irish Restaurant & Bar is a far cry from the Irish experience that I (happily) soaked up while residing in the Emerald Isle.
Nevertheless, on this particularly warm Waiheke day, I’m somewhat relieved that Malones isn’t your typical, dark, enclosed Irish drinking den. The open plan set up allows punters to multi-task—soaking up both Vitamin D and chilled bevies in equal measure.
As you’d expect from an Irish Bar on Waiheke Island, the place is extremely relaxed. So relaxed in fact, that I got the feeling I could step behind the bar and pour my own.
The Irish lass behind the bar was good for a laugh, and kept the beer flowing for our group the entire afternoon; no mean feat considering we were just one group of many and very dehydrated!
The drinks menu is limited, but with Guinness, a few imported varieties, and staples (Mac’s etc) on offer, their’s enough on offer to appeal to most visitors.
And with the pool table, Sky TV and well-stocked jukebox, Malones Irish Restaurant & Bar is the ultimate bloke’s party bach—the only thing missing is the sandy beach and bikini-clad volleyballers.
So, Malone’s is maybe not as authentic as they’d have you believe, yet they come thumbs up with the warm hospitality afforded to all.
