As a destination, Newmarket did have a few strong points: a bar scene, unfortunately, was not one of them. With the opening of Nuffield Street Brew Bar, I’m glad to say the pendulum is now shifting.
Gone are the clichéd brewing memorabilia and brewing equipment—this is the sophisticated model of brew bars where style and substance enjoy parity.
The brew bar is a showcase for the Mac’s beer range; every offering treated with the respect the fine product deserves. Wine drinkers will be disappointed with the limitations (one page covering both red and whites), but when in Rome …
The natural design elements used throughout the bar reaffirm the “All Natural” philosophy that is paramount to the Mac’s brand.
An interesting feature wall displaying a kaleidoscope of different sized drawers climbs up behind the bar. Chandeliers hang over the recycled wooden floors in the main room; and comfort is key, with the inclusion of a mixture of low lounge-seating, wooden tables and odd silver chairs.
The back of the bar is dedicated to the diners; and down the side of the bar is an area with large windows. There’s also a large piece of wooden art work that reminds me of a stack of stickle bricks—the toy of choice when growing up!
The staff are quite hard to pick; the anecdotes about the brand on the backs of their t-shirts are about the only clue offered. Once you have their attention, don’t lose it—the attractive staff are run off their feet at most times.
If you’re planning on visiting the Nuffield Street Brew Bar on a Friday night, make sure you get there before 5pm. The bar is extremely popular with the after-work crowd in the earlier evening and the popularity of the place does not wane as the night progresses.
With the addition of this great bar—it’s no wonder my partner is suspiciously keen on accompanying me on shopping ventures—Newmarket has never looked more inviting.
